Why is my husband getting stomache muscle spasms and leg muscle cramps?!

Question: I am making him a doctors appointment today, but just wanted to ask if anyone has had this problem or know of someone who has this problem. My husband works a very physical job, so he is used to working hard. He even does side jobs after his long day if he can get them. He used to be slender and fit when he was younger. He is only overweight in his mid-section, his legs and everything else if fine. For years now he has gotten leg cramps really really bad. They almost make him cry they hurt so bad. If you touch his leg, it is hard as a rock. Well now, on top of that, he was trying to work out on the ab lounge to help to get rid of his gut and his stomach started having muscle spasms and cramping. I felt his stomache and it was hard as a rock. I was wondering if his smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day could be contributing to this. He has said for about 15 years now that he is going to quit, but has not been able to. What do you think?

He needs to eat some bananas and oranges and stay properly hydrated. He has a mineral deficiency, so have him eat the fruit and drink some gatorade.

Cigarettes can definately have an adverse effect, especially that many a day, but many people smoke and still live healthy lives, so keep up with the workouts and watch his diet.

more potassium in his diet might help

He needs to drink 1 20 Gatorade per day followed by 1 gallon of water. He will loose the belly fat and rehydrate his body at the same time. Do not have him drink any carbonated drinks such as Mt. Dew, Pepsi or Coca Cola as these tend to dehydrate the body. Have him drink 2 cups of coffee per day too. Coffee beans have an abundance of potassium in them, More than bananas or any other fruit.

My hubby sounds EXACTLY like yours. Only mine did pack in smoking a few years ago and can honestly say that it didn't make any difference to his leg cramps. He went to the doctor and now takes Quinine tablets regularly on a repeat prescription and they work well.

That is great that he is seeing the Doctor today.I had leg cramps a lot and sometimes hand cramps.I take a magnesium supplement now and it helps. The other answerers are correct about staying hydrated and getting enough potassium.

sounds like a dietary inbalance, bananas are a good source of pottasium.
But I am thinking a doctor's opinion and not a yahoo quack like me might be an idea if only for peace of mind
