How on Earth do I put ON weight ?!


Question: Hi,
I am about 2st underweight, so my GP says.

I exercise only in terms of 3-4 mile bike rides, long walks with the dog, water skiing in summer etc.

But I eat like a Trojan !
A day of a bacon & egg breakfast with fried slice, a lunch of perhaps left-over shepherds pie, a dinner of suet-ridden steak pud, a cream trifle, and I still cannot put on weight !

This is not doing the cholestrol count much good, but so far the blood is fine.

I even just made myself a load of beef-fat dumplings to nibble on, to see what happened. Nothing.

Any notions ?

Not a common complaint - but many individuals do have an extremely powerful metabolism. You may want to have the doctor examine you for hyperthyroidism.

That said, try following a bodybuilder "Bulking" or "Mass Gain" style diet, with emphasis on starches and protein. Simply putting on fat weight would be unhealthy regardless of your current state - a balance of necessary fat storage and healthy muscle would be more to your benefit.

Try looking at a line of products called 'weight gainers' - perfect for the ectomorph with a high metabolism. Here's an article that discusses various weight gainer products:

Finally, get sufficient rest every day, as most of your body's anabolic (growth) state occurs during the sleep cycle.

Large amounts of cardio vascular exercise keep you thin. They burn of leagues more caloires than most other forms of exercise and do not promote muscle development, the primary source of weight gain from exercise.

The idea behind a weight gaining program is to do a minimal amount of cardio (up to no cardio at all) and weight lifting in it's place.

That and eat! You don't seem to have a problem there, but you get my point.

Try sugary drinks. They get absorbed quickly even if you have a short gut, and the sugar stimulates your appetite.

Try using a weight gainer like muscle juice, you can buy it at bodybuilder.com. There are other weight gainers out there, also, you might try G.N.C. they have a good selection of weight gaining products. My husband is currently trying to gain weight also. The best product that we have found that works good for him is the muscle juice. He started out at 130lbs. now he weighs 145lbs and that was in about 1 month. He also smokes, so that hinders his weight gain. I would suggest first trying bodybuilder.com you set up a plan and routine built around your size proportions.

Hey. I used to be 14 kg underweight. Then I started weight training at the Gym. That was five months ago. I've gained 24kg so far. Remember to eat lots of high protein foods but make sure they are low in fat. If you decide to put on fat you will regret it later. It is hard to burn off.

Eat lots of porridge with protein powder mixed into it for breakfast and tea and before bed. And eat a can of tuna for your lunch. You will see great results.

well you could just eat a load of high calorie crap and get fat, but im assuming you would prefer to pack on the weight in muscle

try reding this article on building size, you should put on about 2lb a week this way, with plenty of muscle gain

lol!! its sounds like your eating the atkins diet without even noticing!!
if your eating just maily meaty stuff and fat and little carbs fruit and veg, then like on the atkins diet you'll lose weight,

add veg, carbs, fruit,

lots of pasta! and bread!
