Is it typical for a mom at age 37 to be physically stronger than her 14 year old!

Question: Yesterday, my son said he was stronger than me.

He's athletic, but very lean. He's a gifted football player (5' 8" 130lbs) and just hitting puberty.

I'm 37 years old and in good shape -- a little overweight, but physically no problems. In high school, I ran track and played basketball.

I challenged him to a bench press competition with 65lbs of total weight. We pretty much did the same number of reps (I did 18 and he did 22) but I could tell it was a struggle for him to get to 22. I felt like I still had some left in the tank, but I didn't want to hurt myself!

I still feel like I'm stronger than he is, am I wrong? How long until there's no question that he is physically stronger than me?

Side note: His dad considers himself to be a physical specimen. College football -- played at 6'2" 225, ran a 4.5 40, and bench pressed 325, squatted 550 -- an all around stud.

So how long will I be stronger than my son...if I actually still am?

Cvt, shut up, you obviously DIDN'T read the question, so stop tying to boost YOUR ego by putting this woman down. You bimbo.

To answer the question, technically, he DID beat you, however I can see where you stand. Right now, I'd say you guys are actually about even. If he was able to do 22, but was a struggle, while you did 18, but didn't want to hurt yourself, that does kind of even out, you see what I mean?

However, in the next 2-3 years, your son will be kicking your butt! Lol.

Best wishes to you and your family!

try him again in 6 months. he's just starting to have testocerone pumped into his system.

I think it is very odd that a 37 year old mother is asking this type of question. However....

First off, juding by your competition, HE'S stronger.. 22 vs 18 reps... Throwing that out, and assuming you indeed are stronger...

As you turn 38 and 39 you will get weaker... as your son turns 15, then sixteen, he will get stronger..

Sometime in the next two years he will overtake you.

I'm sure he will grow stronger all the time---but maybe he'll have more brains than brawn. I feel bad for him that his mother issued a challenge to his 14 year old masculinity, though. That is a tough age. I hope your beating him didn't make him feel too bad. You should maybe think about doing things with him to pump him up instead of deflate his ego, by boosting your own.

I'm not even sure this should be a concern for you and I don't mean to offend but you have a son and he is getting older and he doesn't want to think his "manhood" is tested by his Mother being stronger than him. I wouldn't take it personally and I wouldn't worry. You know what you are capable of and you shouldn't have to think anymore than that. He as a young man doesn't want to think his Mama can beat him. Boys are naturally competitive. I wouldn't be concerned, seriously. Just know you are stronger right now and be proud of your son for wanting to achieve more. Its okay, its all good!
