How bad for a diet is drinking one soda a day?!

Question: I have a horrible soda and sugar addiction that I'm trying to break. Since starting college, I've been gaining weight because the sugary food and drinks have been more accessible. I made the decision to stop but my willpower is starting to fade. I haven't had any soda or sweets for 3 days. My question is how bad is one 12 ounce can of soda (I prefer Dr Pepper) a day for your diet. I've heard that it's okay in moderation, but I know water is the better option.

Hi, Shauna, it sounds like you're doing exactly the right thing. You knew that you were having too much and you cut down. I agree that "all things in moderation" works and I think your one soda a day (regular-size, right?) is a great compromise. If you're trying to lose weight, just count those calories into your total plan. If you're not trying to lose weight, then you're gold! Yes, drink plenty of water the rest of the day and use your soda as a treat!

it's horrible. you will become a fat ugly person

It shouldn't hurt you too much as long as you cut back elsewhere. Soda has about 150 calories per can, so make sure you factor that in when adding up your day's calories. You might consider switching to diet soda. Even at that, I would only drink one per day and make sure you get in plenty of water. If you really want to wean yourself from it, have your soda every day for a week and then maybe start removing days that you drink soda. Six days one week, five days the next week, etc.

try 1 or 2 a week, more than that is indulgence, try to replace it with fruit smoothies (not juices!)

It's not gonna kill ya, but it will have an impact on your mental outlook.....you'll KNOW that when the urge got too great, you caved in. That attitude can set you up for future "cave ins".
My advice would be to ride it out, but promise yourself a "reward" after a certain period.....maybe after one week soda free, you allow yourself one 12 oz can?
The "carrot/stick" approach works quite well when dieting, especially mentally, because you always know that you haven't given up pop forever....just for this week.
Best of luck.

I believe you want to force your body into burning its stored energy, correct?
It makes it very difficult to do this if you feed it simple sugars that are easier to burn because they are already in the blood stream. Also, if you dont burn all the sugar up, it will be stored as fat and that is counter-productive to your goal--I believe?
hope this helps. have a good day.
