Is it true that if you lose a large amount of weight your skin will be saggy?!

Question: I recently heard or read somewhere that if you are overweight and lose 20 or more pounds then you are going to end up needing plastic surgery to put your skin back in place, because the fat gets burned but the skin stays the same size it was and becomes saggy and gross. I need to lose about 50-75 pounds (to be healthy, not to be pretty or popular or whatever), but I'd almost rather stay the weight I am if I'm just going to end up with a bunch of loose skin hanging all over me, that sounds gross. Is it true that this happens and there's no way to prevent it? Thanks!

I have lost a total of 30 lbs of fat and gained 5 lbs of muscle. My skin is not saggy or gross in anyway. In fact, because I am losing the weight the skin is tightening back up again and my stretch marks are fading fast. If you eat right and exercise at a good pace your body's skin will come right along. The only time where people must be considered about the skin not coming back is if you lose the weight too quickly (called extreme weight loss) or you are very old. So don't worry lose the weight at a good pace and you will be happy and healthy.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

if you're older, it's worse than if you're younger. older skin is thinner and will sag more. but i think anyone who loses 50-75 pounds will have saggy skin afterwards. the skin stretches when you gain weight, that's just how it goes. but you should really try to lose the weight anyway, especially because you know you need to do it for your health.

it can happen but with enought exercise and body toning then i car,t see it happening

yes, if you do it very quickly and drastically, and without any exercising. Go slowly, exercise all the parts of your body, and it will shrink back. Especially pay attention to your chin. People exercise bellies and legs and back, but forget about the chin, and then it dangles like an udder! Do special chin exercises, look for them on-line. Good luck.

It depends on your age. When you are young your skin is elastic and can bounce back. If you are older your skin will lose its elasticity and you will have saggy skin.

When you lose weight, it will take a little longer for your skin to tighten up, but don't worry about it. You won't have a lot of loose sking around you.

I've lost 45 pounds, and not had any sagging issues, so that 20 pounds statement is rubbish.

A lot of this is genetics (and sex... I'm a guy), so there's no way someone can say there's some "rule" or magic number.

However, one problem is, it's a misconception that skin 'stretches' when you get fat.
The worse problem is, new skin actually grows to fill the space. This is bad news! So that's why if there is a LOT of weight loss, or you lose it too quickly, that increases your odds of having excess sagging skin.

My suggestion is to lose it as slowly as you can. This improves your body's ability to retain elasticity in the skin.

Have you noticed on "The Biggest Loser" that the guys start out weighing in with their shirts off, but later, after they've lost all this weight (quickly), they always have their shirts on?
I think there are some skin sagging situations going on there, and they don't want to show it on the show, because it makes them look bad.
Lose slowly & see what happens.
That's my best advice.

My sister in law was 22 stone, she went on a diet and got down to 12 stone and she has loads of loose skin, she never wears short sleeved tops as she has as she puts it 'bat wings'.

stuff like that only happens if you have gastro-bypass surgery. if you work out and excersise, you will build muscle and you fat will burn away and you won't have saggy skin.

Your skin will more than likely not be saggy if you only need to lose about 20 pounds. It really varies on the person though. I have seen people that have lost 100 pounds and do not have very saggy skin, and then I have seen people that have lost 80 pounds that have very saggy skin. The best way to prevent your skin from being saggy during weight loss is adding strength training to your workout(working out with weights or resistance). Good luck!

Only when you're older...
Like, 50's and up..

It is only true if you lose alot of weigh in a short amount of time. I'm 21 5'11 and in August 2007 I decided to lose weigh. Currently I lost over 75 pounds and my overall goal is to lose 110 pounds. I do not have saggy skin. Aim to lose 1-2 pounds per week and do exercises using light weights to tone your body to prevent excess skin.

As a rule it is true but this is not the reason for not loosing weight if need be.

I do not think a 20 lbs loss will create visible sagging of the skin. But it depends on the condison of the skin which in turn is associated with age as a rule.

This can be avoided by loosing only 1/2 a pound of weight and no more every week. Even batter will be to loose steadily and take even 20 month to loose, all 20 pounds.

Please read my articles on the related subject and do as you please.

Who is over weight?

According to this calculation if you find your self say only 10 pounds more, you may not be over weight. Remember every one is slightly different and you can just watch it, on your own and not let it get out of hand.

What is the reason for being over weight?

This is also simple, have doctor check you out for any physical or hormonal abnormalities. The doctor should be advising you of your ideal weight even though you have already figured out the ideal weight and you are seen a doctor because your weight is not where it should be according to BMI.

Basic understanding of loosing weight.

Every one uses calories at all time. There may be some exceptions to this rule, for most of us; the rate of use, even when we are resting, we use 65 calories per hour minimum. This comes to1560 calories per day. The actual range is between 65 and 100 calories per hour. This is consistent with heart rate of 60 to 80 bits per minute.

Simply put any person eating only say 1500 calories a day will not put on any additional weight. At this level of calories consumption the person should loose some weight over long haul, depending on the individual rate of metabolism.

One pound of body fat weight is approximately same as one pound of butter. If you look at a one pound package of butter, you will see it contains between 3200 to 3600 calories. How many pounds should a person loose in a month?

Any one that is trying to trim down can figure out how long it took to put on the excess pounds. The fact is; it did not happen over night. It usually creeps up, but the person realizes one day suddenly.

This is why a person should not be in a hurry to loose weight. The person should start at once but go slowly. Do not wait for New Year.

Taking above in to consideration a person should not loose more then 2 pounds per month. If a person looses any thing more then that, chances are that the person will not be able to maintain the weight loss. It will take extra efforts to loose and it will take extra efforts to keep it off. Remember slow and steady wins the race.

At once. The person should not be in a hurry to loose weight. The person should start at once but go slowly. Again do not wait for New Year.

How does body react to weight lose?

Any time there is depletion of fat beyond certain level, the body reacts by slowing down metabolism, so that it can build up fat. At 1500 calories intake per day what one must drink and eat?

Drink

One gallon of liquids most of witch should be in the form of water (zero calories).
Calories should be accounted for all other liquids.

Why water?

Water is a universal solvent, means it dissolves almost every thing at least in very minute quantities. This helps purification of body.

Eat

What should be your proportionate in take of fat, Proteins and Complex Carbohydrates?

This depends on what your need are.

1.Need to reduce fat.

Fat: 10 percent of 1500 calorie per day = 150 calories.
Complex Carbohydrates: 30 percent of 1500 calories per day = 450 calories.
Proteins: 60 percent of 1500 calories per day = 900 calories.

2.Need more energy.

Fat: 10 percent of 1500 calorie per day = 150 calories.
Complex Carbohydrates: 40 percent of 1500 calories per day = 450 calories.
Proteins: 50 percent of 1500 calories per day = 750 calories.

3.Need to reduce weight only.

Fat: 25 percent of 1500 calorie per day = 375 calories.
Complex Carbohydrates: 25 percent of 1500 calories per day = 375 calories.
Proteins: 50 percent of 1500 calories per day = 750 calories.

4.Need to increase muscles bulk, but still reduce weight.

Fat: 10 percent of 1500 calorie per day = 150 calories.

Foot note: To take fat is so important, while reducing even fat, that it is included in all cases. If the fat is completely cut out, body will think of producing the fat, and will produce the fat by reducing metabolism, without fat in take, you may actually again weight even at lower than 1500 calorie level. You will feel run down and lethargic.

How one must, drink and eat?

Drink

Every one may not be able to follow this regime.

A 16 oz glass of water first thing in the morning will be very healthy start.
If you need to stabilize your stomach before eating, you can have a glass of water just before each and every meal. This is the easiest way to meet your quota of gallon of liquids.

Eat

To day almost half the world is starving.

In western culture. Standard healthy practice for long time was three warm square meals per day. No eating in between, but children were allowed night cap.

All that has changed, present thinking is 5 to 6 times per day. Any way what practice one follows is up to them; to each his own.

Another best practice will be a glass of water before bed time, nothing to eat for two hours before bed time.

Lots of cook book now a days list calorie per serving.

Increasing the Height
By

In rare cases, you can increase the height up to age 30.

Cycling is good exercise and fun too.

You need to adjust the seat so that when you paddle from seating position you will actually stretch your legs, it is a difficult position but doable. For safety you need to be on track and not in traffic, safety first.

The FEW things I did at least helped me.

Swimming.

Not just playing in water, but serious laps type swimming, do not try to beat the clock but steady full strokes swimming. Remember slow and steady wins the race.

Stretching exercises on floor.

No, if your younger your skin is still elastic. Also as long as you drink water like your supposed to it will help a great deal.
