It will drasticly reduce your likelyhood for dislocation type injuries. This is due largely to the way that those rotator cuff muscles cradle your humeral head. The rotator cuff is comprised of a series of specific muscles called the S.I.T.S. muscles. This stands for Supraspinatus (abduction of the humerus), Infraspinatus (lateral rotaion of the humerus), Teres minor (lateral rotaion at the shoulder), and Subscapularis (medial rotaion) all serving to stabilize the head of the humerus. If you have reason to believe that your shoulders are unstable or suspect them to be weak by all means work them regularly.
it wont prevent. but it will lower your chance of injury. just hit every muscle of your shoulders and back if you want to minimize injury. take it slowly at first though until you know how much weight you can lift.
