The best diet to go on is the one you will stick with. Just about any diet will work if you follow it to the letter. But your lifestyle and relationship with food will make some diets harder to stick to than others. If you are looking for reasonable, long-term results, I recommend weight watchers (yes, guys go there too). Simply because it's easy to follow, you can get support if you want it, and it's proven to work.

That being said, if you are needing more hand holding, Jenny Craig and Nutri Systems provide the food for you and you don't have to make a lot of decisions. They also offer support and counseling. The draw back is that they are expensive.

If you are looking to lose weight quickly and don't care if it's a long-term lifestyle change, low fat and low calorie diets are effective. Low carb diets seem to really work for some people too, but can be hard to stick to if you aren't a big meat eater or love your carbs! The South Beach Diet is one that combines lower fat and calories, with decrease simple carbohydrates. It's a pretty reasonable diet that works for a lot of people.

But one of the most important parts of a diet when you are trying to lose a lot of weight and keep it off is to increase your exercise. You don't have to join a gym or be a fanatic. Just start being more active, get your heart rate up for 30 - 60 minutes most days. Walking, biking, swimming, yard work are all easy ways to get this in.

leave diet out of your vocabulary. Do not eliminate carbs, you need those for energy. Eat plenty of fruit and veggies, whole grains, and stay away from red meat. You only need 3oz of protein per meal so dont order a 12oz sirloin! do at least 30min of cardio 5 days a week. Its a life style change, not a diet.

If you want to lose weight AND improve your health, learn about a healthy diet/nutrition, enjoy regular physical activities that YOU like, get enough good sleep and learn how to handle stress!

Those are the basics that we all need, if those things above are lacking, excess body weight and poor health will be the result.

Id say the best diet for a dieter to lose the most weight quickly is the low carb diet. You have to follow the rules though and they are quite strict; one little cheat and you've set yourself back a week or so. I would also say that when you quit this diet you gain weight back quickly also.

If your looking for "long-term" weightloss id suggest finding a plan you can stick with and go from there.

Fiber Diet. Foods high in fiber generally have less fat.
