athletes need to replace sodium after sweating. if they were just drinking water they could have a heart attack. we need sodium for our electrolytes, which is like electricity in the body. low sodium means a decrease in electrolytes and if you aren't replacing the sodium after sweating your body is going to shut down.

someone who just drinks a lot of gatorade and not exercising as much as an athlete might just get a lot of water retention.

most people who drink sports drinks are exercising
and sweating.
when you sweat you lose salt as well
once you lose a certain amount of salt you dehydrate even if you are drinking water.

They put sodium in sports drinks because when you sweat you loose sodium. I wouldn't reccommend drinking them if you are not doing a serious work out because you will take in too much sodium.

sodium is an electrolyte, and a vital element to living organisms just like calcium and potassium...just to name a few of the more important ones. these must maintain a certain level in your body and blood for you to remain healthy. you loose electrolytes when you sweat, and the whole concept of sports drinks like gatorade is to help you be able to maintain an active lifestyle without losing electrolytes unnecessarily. the drink has ingredients that ordinary water does not supply to replenish what the body loses sensibly-(sweat for example) or insensibly- (moist air/breath you exhale for example)

they put it in there so your body absorbs it quicker. That is the only reason they do this. They say on their commercials Gatorade- rehydrates faster than water. That is why.
