A hang clean works mainly the shoulders, traps and biceps to a lesser extent, you also work your legs. You also use your abs and lower back for stability. The clean works the same muscles, but incorporates the legs much more. The focus is on the quads and glutes for the first part of the lift (calves, hamstrings and ab/adductors are secondary), with the upper body muscles coming in after the bar crosses the thighs. The goal of the hang clean and clean is to develop explosive lifting power and use a large majority of the muscles in the body to execute the move.
