Impaired Metabolism?!

Question: I eat a well-balanced 1200 calorie a day diet of mainly fresh fruits and steamed vegetables, fish and lean white meats, no fried or processed or "fast" foods and don't drink coffee, tea, alcohol, or colas (diet or regular). I walk a little over one mile a day, four to five times a week, at 3 miles per hour, spending 20 to 35 minutes walking during my exercise time.

The problem is, I continue to gain weight - about 15 pounds over the last 9 months (and no, I'm not pregnant).

My doctor has stated that the only way I can possibly hope to lose weight is gastric by-pass.

Does anyone have any suggestions aside from surgery?

I need to lose about 60 pounds.

Has your doctor checked your thyroid & other glands/organs/hormones that may be the cause of your impaired metabolism? If so, what does he say is the cause - protein not being converted properly, etc.?

I intake more calories & processed food than you do (I still have an occasional soda & coffee), but my weight has been steady for the last several years. I have dropfoot, so cannot do a lot of walking/running for exercise. I concentrate on tai chi & yoga to maintain balance & tone muscles, then do some resistance training in a local public pool when I can fit it in.

If I were you & my doctor was only offering one solution, or hasn't exhausted all avenues of tests, I'd get another opinion.
