Anyone have any advice about body pump?!

Question: I did body pump for years but then developed a neck injury so gave it up. i have had xrays, chiropractor, osteopathic treatment etc. However now a lot better although it still niggles some times. I have been going to the gym but to be honest i hate it!. i cannot use the weights properly and give up after 10 reps.

I was thinking of returning to body pump just one day a week and doing gym on other days. what do you think?

Do you think body pump places strain on the neck? I had a car crash 4 years ago and that is where injury came from ?? but dr said body pump may have exacerbted it. I have read that weight training is best for losing fat around bum etc and cannot do this in the gym.

Also if i keep my weights really low will this still tone my wobbly bits?
cheers

Hi there, well, I can totally relate to your problem. I do body pump and had a car crash last May, resulting in lasting neck and back pain. I go to the gym quite a bit but do love body pump. I have had a long chat with the instructor and he has advised me to keep the weights low, at least until I have built up my muscle strength. I think it can put strain on the neck if you don't do it properly. For example the lunge and squat track where you have the bar across your shoulders, some people place it on their neck rather than the fleshy part of their shoulders, and this can cause problems for your neck. My instructor advises if your neck is bad, don't have the bar up on your shoulders, merely hold weights in each hand when you do squats. It is very important to have a good posture when doing the moves, otherwise, you end up with back and neck pain. As for keeping the weights low - yes it will tone your wobbly bits! I don't even use weights for the lunge track, and also go that bit deeper and I have noticed a huge difference in my bum and thighs. Stick with it, but go easy. It all takes time. Start low and don't even think about what others are putting on in the class, most people are too busy watching what they are doing themselves ! Good luck.

Didn't your doctor say anything constructive?
If you cannot use the weights properly, get one of the attendants to demonstrate.

Weightlifting isn't the best way to lose fat, you want a cardiovascular workout. Try spin classes, exercise bikes, rowing machines and cross trainers. They aren't so bouncy so I don't imagine they will exacerbate your injury.

If you want to tone your muscles too and you can't get comfortable with weights, use those electric-shock pads... um slim-tone I think their called. They are very reasonably priced now and you can buy them almost anywhere.

to be honest i think u shud be so careful - the last thing u want is long term pain problems that need a lot of medical management - this is a lot more common than u think.

yes i do think that body pump probably put pressure on ur neck, sice ur pretty much lifting weights AND doing other things for an extended period of time.

U don't need to do body pump to be fit and toned!

u cud do ur own weights one or twice a week, with advice from gym people. Would u consider doing other exercises? Swimming is FANTASTIC for this sort of thing and a brilliant exercise for toning ALL muscles and losing weight. pilates is great for toning butt and everything else.
