Try biking if you want to focus on that specific area. Here's why I say that.

I used to have this membership to a gym when I was in college, and I decided that riding the bikes would be an excellent thing to do while doing homework (reading a textbook and highlighting). So 3-4 days a week I rode the stationary bike for about an hour while doing homework. I did it at a gym that was on my way home from school anyway, so it was really convenient to just pop in.

I guess I wasn't paying attention, because one day about a month into it, I was at school and I bent over to pick something up and my jeans (button-fly 501s) slipped right off of me--my boyfriend was standing next to me and grabbed them when they were around my thighs. It's a good thing, too, or they would have been puddled around my feet.

I also spent 2 months in the summer of 1989 working for the Census Bureau, helping prepare for the 1990 census. My job was as an enumerator, which basically meant verifying addresses by checking every single address in a given area against a big book, and stopping in at every fourth house and verifying the address with the occupant. For those 2 months, I walked for 8 hours every day, 5 days a week. I got plenty firm, and lost a bit more on my hips, but that 2 months of walking did not do what 1 month of biking did--I firmed up in different places on my body.

If you want to lose specifically in your sides and hips, I really recommend biking, rather than walking. The biking made my legs toned, but not bulky, but it really slimmed my hips and sides. The walking, on the other hand, didn't have as big an effect on my hips and sides, but my legs got first very firm, and then started getting really bulky. By the end of the 2 months, I had long cut-off shorts that I could no longer wear because my thighs had gotten so big--they were just too tight for comfort right around the middle of my thigh, about 6 inches above my knees.

All aerobic exercise will help you lose fat and tone up, be it walking or riding a bike or swimming laps. The key is to focus on the muscle groups you really want to work on, rather than doing something that will help a different area of your body. Since the circular motion of the bike works those muscles on the hips, that's what I recommend.

It's hard to get into the habit. If you have a bike, and want to ride it outside during the summer, please be sure you stay well-hydrated. I know from experience that it's often easier to simply ride a stationary bike and do something like read or watch a movie--you don't even notice how long you do it because you get wrapped up in whatever else you are doing. Just remember to start slow, and work your way up. And if you have soreness that doesn't go away, you need to cut back a bit, because you are working too hard.

Best of luck to you ;)
