Water: Healthy or Humiliating?!

Question: At school on Friday me and two other friends was in the gym exercising. I had some bottled water that I was drinking. One of my friends said to me,"Haha, it would so humiliating to have a water bellie!" Water bellie? That word ran through my head for about 50 seconds then I said,"Water bellie? Are you telling me that water makes you fat?" Her response was,"Well, yeah! If you drink so much water a day it'll start building up on you and give you a water bellie. You didn't know that?" So I said to her,"No, whoever told you that must be crazy! My mom was on weightwatchers and they told her to drink 8 glasses of water a day because it's healthy and goes right through you!"

So I need your guys' answer: Does water give you a water bellie, or does it go right through you?

Oh how the educational system fails us again...

First off, water has no calories, no fat, no carbohydrates, or any other measure that could be used to gain weight.

Second, the only "belly" you would get would be a temporary inflation of your mid-section if you drank a lot of water and were a small/skinny person. Your belly might extend a touch like it would if you ate a large meal. However, your body will metabolize the water very quickly. What it doesn't need or can't use gets processed as waste. During that process it helps flush out toxins and other bodily wastes. So you end up going to the bathroom more...mostly #1, but water helps lubricate solid waste as well.

Tell your friend she needs to take (or retake) biology again.

However, it should be noted that too much water can be unhealthy as well. For example, drinking 20 cups of water a day can damage your kidneys. Like everything in life...too much of anything is bad for us humans.

no, it doesnt give you water belly! she is just trying to tease you.

I have never heard of a water belly, she was probably messing with your head. Water is very good for you, keep hydrated!!!

water is healthy but it does give a small water belly.that's why male models don't drink much water because their job depends on their abs.but don't stop drinking water , it's not noticeable to the rest of the world.

There's no such thing as a "water belly". In fact, drinking more is actually beneficial for losing weight and getting into better shape. When you deprive your body of water, it will hold on to what it has left. This is water weight. But when you drink more, it constantly flushes out of your system and doesn't need to store any. So basically, not drinking water is worse for your belly than drinking more.

thats stupid well if you drink too much water at once you could feel full but after a while it goes away and its good to drink a lot of water it cleans ur body but dont drink like gallons of water at once cause the water could go to your brain and you can die.

well it may bloat your belly, but this is temporary for a couple of hours or less...drinking 8 glasses of wate each day, not only doesnt make you fat, but it also flushes the fat and toxins on your body through urine

It is not possible for water to "build up" in the body. Good hydration is important for health, and I know I personally feel better when I've been drinking lots of water.
It is possible that too much water is bad for you but it would be impossible to actually drink the amount of water that it would take.
I guess you could feel a bit bloated temporarily if you drank a lot of water but all you need to do is go to the toilet!

No, not true! And I'm sorry, but I just had to compliment you on your grammar skills! Half the time all I ever find on here are people who have no clue how to spell or use proper grammar. Your question was a welcomed change :]
