Is the "Freshmen 15" fact or fiction?!

Question: After running round town doing a survey I could not come to a solid conclusion and I dont want to get an "F" on my Psych project so I need some help.

My hypothesis was it was fiction because kids would be busier outside the family home by supporting themselves, having more fun and social interaction, and not being kept at home during certain time periods.

Responses have been

"It is fact"

"It is total fiction"

"It depends were you go"

"Its true but it is less then 15 pounds"

"It happens but only with guys"

Definetly need some help here to sum this thing up

What are your expeiences/opinions?
If it is not 15 pounds how much is it?
Does it favor one gender over another?
Why can't students adapt without gaining, or can they?

yes and most people can't handle putting the donuts down so they keep gaining more and more weight.in women i'm sure birth control could play a part with water retention

It's common, but not fact or fiction. It depends if the student is aware of what they're eating and how often they're exercising or not.

It really does depend on the person and whether or not you live on campus and eat the food and go to parties. Beer is high in calories, and the food they serve isnt that good for you either. I have friends that have lost weight, or gained 30lbs. It all depends on the food you eat and the way your lifestyle changes.

It all depends on how a person handles their new-found independance and stress. Some people eat a lot more to compensate, some people eat a lot less because of their stress. I lost 32 pounds, my friend gained 10. It's all about coping mechanisms, your teacher will like that LOL.
