Why is everyone obsessed with weight loss?!

Question: When I go on the internet, read magazines and watch tv - it's EVERYWHERE. Is this just a thing with Americans or is it all over the world? I am overweight and considering weight loss surgery because I am also diabetic. But I am getting so sick and tired of seeing weight loss commercials and reading about it on the internet and in magazines all the time. When I was in my teens and twenties, I thought I was the fattest person on the face of the earth and I wasn't. Actually I was quite slim and very attractive. If I had realized that then though, I could've spent those years having fun and enjoying myself instead of obsessing about a weight problem I really didn't even have. Isn't that what makes the world go round, different shapes and sizes, colors and nationalities, etc. etc.?

I too am tired of seeing weight loss products everywhere...BUT...I do think that Americans need to get serious about exercising and eating right. We're the fattest people in the world and it's only getting worse - not to mention all the conditions and complications that come with being heavy.
I work out 5-6 days per week - not because I want to be skinny, but because I want to be *healty*. My mother has had a heart attack, she's diabetic; my father has high cholesterol. Both sides of my family have a lot of horrible diseases that are common and many relatives have died young simply because they didn't eat right or take care of themselves. I don't want that to be me.

because they dont wanna be fat

im not lol

yea they are trying to lose weight and im trying to gain weight!!!

1. Fashion, and wish to confirm to standards on some extend.
2. Longer live expentansy, and less risk to some forms of cancer, and (not surprising) diabetes, hearth failure - Being normal weight is healthy.
3. Better mobility, better feeling with ones body, less tiredness.
It is assumed to be a GOOD thing. It is, as long as it makes person happy.

i think because a lot of ppl really do have weight pproblems but also media nad bodyimage/eating disorders...

im not lol

Because we're the 2nd fattest country in the world and obesity is quickly gaining as a leading cause of death(from different related diseases).

Besides, no one wants to make out with the fat kid.

because thin is in

because people are shallow!!!! plus its the typo the commercial world has set out for everybody.

just ignore it and be happy!!!!!

It's all about money. In fashion, and advertising, sex sells. The female body is idolized to a point far beyond any normal figure.

But then all these weight loss services, people forget are also part of a multi billion dollar industry aimed at making profits for thier company. Despite what they do to help thier consumers get in shape, they capatalize on consumer's willingness to pay for these services.

cash rules everythinggggg.

well, the truth is... there are way too many actually overweight people in America and in the world in general. But, yes, especially in America. It is very annoying to see all these weight loss pills, patches, drinks and fad diets to promote weight loss. People want quick solutions to losing weight. Fast food has a lot to play into this and junk food in general. It's very unhealthy, and so many people have bad diets. It's hard to get on the right track, for sure.
A lot of people have eating disorders. Belimia, anorexia, or eating for emotional reasons can be a big one. A lot of people self-medicate with food.
And yes, people who are not even a little overweight start to say things like, "Do I look fat in this?" As much as being overweight has become a problem, so is people just obsessing about their weight in general. A lot of people who are healthy and look great complain about fat... or their body in general. It's unhealthy. A lot of those people have no idea what being overweight is. Some people do it for attention... and some may actually think they're fat. Who knows.
But, the truth is, people who are overweight really should go about making a healthy lifestyle for themselves, eating right and exercising so they could lose weight. But, yeah, I have to agree, it's annoying... it's frustrating and annoying that people are overweight. And I'm saying this as someone who has lost weight. But, I don't take for granted ever once being really overweight, because I truly appreciate how much healthier and attractive I am for it. The eating habits and exercise habits we have now have impact on us in the future.

Its only a big thing in America because no other country has the same obesity epidemic we have. This is because food companies lobby to the government which really should not be allowed but hey it is a free country. What they do is lobby to the goverment and get bad laws passed like the one that says you can put msg into food and call it natural flavoring to trick people who are tryin to avoid it.

Doritos, campells soups, and many other of our favorite snack foods contain msg. Oddly there is all this bologna about low carb diets on the news whcih cause constipation.

What the problem is that our food companies make a profit every year higher than last year which means Americans need to eat more. This is the major cause of putting addictive chemicals in food like msg and aspartame, and high fructose corn syrup. I went to ireland last year and noticed they do not have any high fructose corn syrup in there sodas they just use sugar yet no one is obese there. I am serious i have been to portgual and ireland and canada and barely see even one obese person there yet in my town i see hundreds of obese people everday. This is because the government doesn't protect our health it's not anyones fault just the way our system works if you have a lot of money you can send a lobbiest to the government and try to pay for any law you want.
