Question: Why is it when I walk a mile I expend more calories than when I cycle !

Question: Surely cycling is more energetic?

Answers: Surely cycling is more energetic?

Is it because it takes you longer to walk a mile than to cycle? So walking briskly you keep your active heart rate up for 15 mins. Cycling you would have an active heart rate for 6 mins (the length it took you to do a mile). So if you cycled for 15 mins and walked for 15 mins cycling would win.

Because when you walk you are carrying your weight. When you cycle the bike is carrying it! Obvious really.

Coz u do more efort when walking than when cycling, coz when cycling, u use a machine to help u, so it does most of the job, while when walking, u're using ur own effort.

cor I got out of breath just reading this the man who answered first must be right

Because when you are walking or jogging you are carrying you own body weight. When you are cycling all of your weight is being supported.

because it takes longer to walk than it does to ride, so your heart rate is accelerated for a longer period of time. thus, you burn more calories.

it takes like 5 minutes to bike a mile and like 15 to walk so i'd say time is the main factor

Also the legs are getting the main work out, so all the blood flow and energy is going only to your legs, not your legs, arms, stomach and so on when you are walking. It just seems like your using more energy on the bike, but that's because it's all focused into one area of your body.

When walking you are using a larger range of muscles, you are using your muscles for a longer period, as cycling a mile takes much less time.

In cycling your wheels are "cheating" for you...keep up the walking even when it seems like its not helping any. I stopped because #1 have a car now #2 moved to the country and nowhere to walk to or no roads without superfast semis going by..thinking of getting a treadmill. Ive gained 15 lbs and Ive been walking less than I ever have and now weigh more than I ever have and I feel fat enough to butcher....

A bike is more efficient mechanically, that's the point of riding a bike, it makes it easier. You can travel further and faster for less effort.
