To answer one of your questions, Whey should be taken AFTER a workout.

Whey protein helps build muscle as "it provides the necessary building blocks to produce the amino acids that it the body uses to build lean muscle tissue. Many studies have shown that whey protein contains the perfect combination of amino acids, in just the right concentration for optimal performance in the body. It is also thought that whey protein has a role as an anti-oxidant and immune system builder."

Naturally you MUST workout in order for you muscle tissues to be repaired and for them to grow. Otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.

But i would be weary of much of that stuff. one of my friends has done competetive bodybuilding and is a firefighter and has influenced me much on diet and working out, and he's as knowlegdeable as any on the subject and his figure speaks for itself.

He rarely takes these supplements and has criticized much of them to be "condensed junk food." he's also reiterated that protein and weight gain powders are "NO substitute" for healthy, well rounded diet.

If you wanna grow, EAT! eat lots. naturally eat alot of lean protein. fresh fruit in the morning, veggies with your protein, minimize carbs and try to have them before your workouts and drink tons of water. avoid the obvious - processed foods, starches and sugars.

I would have to agree with the above post that you should carefully consider working out as you are still growing, you body will be changing, especially at your age. There is the theory that it may stunt your growth.

Wow you are way too young to be worried about things like that.
Why would you even believe your friend? How do you know he isn't lying..Wow kids are so gullible...

Whey protein does not buld muscle, exercise builds muscle. When you work out, your muscles develop small tears, your larger muscles are the swelling from healing. Whey protein aids in healing. Any protien will do the same, but whey protiens contain a low level of fat and cholesterol but generally have higher levels of bioactive compounds, and carbohydrates in the form of lactose, which is why they usually have a milky taste. Simply put, Whey protein is a good way to get protein without the fat and cholesterol typically found in other protien sources such as meat.

Having said that, at 14, you could seriousy stunt your growth if you try to build too much muscle too soon. I'd suggest moderate weight lifting with more emphasis on lighter weights and higher repititions.
