Ankles Hurt & Shin-splints (sp?)?!


Question:

Ankles Hurt & Shin-splints (sp?)?

When I run on my tredmill my ankles hurt and I get shin-splints, I feel like I could still run more, but i end up slowing down b/c they hurt, what can I do to make it stop & what am I doing wrong?

I dont want to stop working out b/c Im really tryin to lose weight and im just not seeing results as fast as I want to. What could I do instead when Im hurting there?

The first thing I would do is evaluate my shoes. If they are old or not specifically running shoes I would change them out for some that are. If that doesn't work, definitely stop until you figure out what is going on. Pushing through the pain doesn't hold true for joints. You can really mess them up. You don't want to be old and not be able to walk without pain 'cause you pushed it too hard on the treadmill now. I would recommend a visit to a physical therapist. They see this stuff all the time and know exactly how to get you bettter. A doctor will just send you to one anyway. Some insurance will let you schedule a PT within your network without even seeing a doctor first. And if you don't have insurance it should cost around $100. It is well worth it.
