Other than walking, what can my 68 year old obese mother do for cardio exercise?!

Question:

Other than walking, what can my 68 year old obese mother do for cardio exercise?

What would be the best way for her to get started. She recently had her 2nd stroke, which was very mild with no significant consequences, much like her first. However, this one seems to have gotten her attention and she is resolved to improving her health. She has had many diagnostic tests and has received a clean bill of health regarding her heart. She is 5'3" and roughly 210 lbs. I don't want her to overdue it, but I want her to get the best cardio workout she can without hurting herself. Hopefully exercise with significant dietary changes can add years to her life. Any insight will be appreciated.

Answers:

Until she gets stronger, walking is probably her best option right now. If she is medically able, she should start with brisk walking. She may only be able to walk a mile at first, but it is better than not walking at all.

Have her increase the distance and the pace as she gets fitter until she can jog for some of it.

She might also want to look into cycling an swimming. Swimming especially is easy on the joints and is good cardiovascular exercise.

Have her try weightlifting as well. It is good for all ages and any muscle gains she gets will ensure she can be active for a long time to come. It's never too late.

The key here is consistency and constant improvement. She must do this every day and push herself a little all the time. At the same time, make sure she doesn't try do too much too soon.

Check her diet too. Make sure she is eating healthy. To prevent blood clots, a glass of wine a day will help.
