Are protein/amino acid supplements a rip off?!

Question:

Are protein/amino acid supplements a rip off?

I understand the RDA is 63 grams of protein a day, but if you ask any bodybuilder he will tell you 1 gram per pound of body weight. I'm getting tired of spending a lot of money on this stuff if there really is no use for it. I see results when I take it, but I have read articles that say they have no proof it will help in muscle enhancement.

Answers:

If you are not on a controlled diet, then I think I agree with you.. that you are wasting your money. the only reason to take supplements is to get the protein you need to build muscle but without also getting the carbs or fat you always get when you have protein high natural foods.

I think there is plenty of evidence that it helps build muscle mass to increase your protein intake. grams per pound... doesn't that always sound funny to you (merging metric with imperial)? Anyway, I thought it was a good idea to have a higher amount than one gram per pound.... like about 1.7 grams per pound of lean muscle mass (discounting for your body fat).
