Are there any foods out there that actually lower cholesterol?!

Question: Are there any foods out there that actually lower cholesterol!?
I just had blood-work done as a requirement for signing up for Amica Life Insurance!. They sent a nurse to our home to take our blood!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.and 5 days later, I was told that my cholesterol is "elevated"!.!.!.!.!.!.and therefore when I die, my wife wont get as much money as was originally expected!.

Apparently I am now "high risk" to them!.

So are there any steps I can take to lower my cholesterol WITHOUT drugs!? From what I know, the cholesterol medications that are out there work, but at the cost of messing up your liver!.

And thoughts or advice!?

Thanks,

I scored a total cholesterol level of 220 and upon being told that - I did what I knew to do - and in 4 months brought it to 153!. My "good" cholesterol went from 40 to 45!.!.!. and I continue to work on raising it!.

Here's the deal:

My diet already has removed fried foods from external sources!.
My diet has already cut beef to once every 6 months, and pork to once every 3 months!.
Because of Diabetes - I already had removed refined sugars and changed all things white to all things brown:
White flour for stone growned wheat (not Graham flour) -
Brown rice for white -
7, 9, or 12 Grain wheat bread for white -
Dreamfields or Barilla Whole Grain Pasta instead of white pasta -
Sweet potatoes or red skinned potatoes for white Irish potatoes - etc!.

I replaced corn oil for frying and cooking with a blend of mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats like Canola, Olive and Flax seed oils to raise Omega 3, 6, and 9's!.

I use "Smart Balance" brand butter, peanut butter, shortening, etc!. I use canola and olive oil cooking sprays!.!.!. all non-trans-fat items!.

And yet my cholesterol rose!.

What I had slacked off doing was taking my Cinnamon, CLA, ALA, CoQ10, Kyolic Garlic and Salmon oil supplements, drinking my sugar free (generic) Metamucil every morning, and eating my one serving of nuts a day!.

(One serving of nuts is the size of the palm of your hand - and almonds are the best!. They aid in removing cholesterol from your veins!.)

Also - one ounce of dark sugar free chocolate every other day or so provides necessary intensive bioflavanoids to strengthen your heart and blood vessels!.

The American Medical Association did a study comparing Statin drugs to cinnamon - cinnamon lowered bad cholesterol EQUALLY as well as the Statin drugs without the severe health risks of the Statins!. I take 1 teaspoon a day in capsule form!. WalMart and Sam's sell them!.

I eat whole grain cereals for breakfast!. Some folks take up Oatmeal - I can't, my blood sugar goes nuts!. I eat "Ezekiel 4:9's" Flaxseed cereal and Kashi products!.

I returned to that practice and got it down quickly!.

I am Diabetic - 5'2" and 300 pounds!. By all rights I should have blood pressure that could power Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan electrical turbines - and cholesterol in the 500's!.

I don't!.

My blood pressure is 96/49 and my total cholesterol is 153!.

Eat more fish and chicken - convert your whites to browns - learn to like LOTS of veggies take the supplements, and drink your fiber!.

Exercise raises good cholesterol!. The higher the good cholesterol the far more wonderful!.

I take a huge number supplements for all my M*A*N*Y health issues!.!.!. and I cut out the middle man and get them direct from an American Manufacturer: Puritan's Pride!. Call for a Catalog, hon!. They have sales where you can get 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 all the time!. I'm on a fixed income, so it helps!.

I'm going to second the idea of having your cholesterol checked by your primary care provider!. It doesn't hurt to know your numbers!. There are 3, your total cholesterol, your HDL, and LDL!.

Your LDL is "bad" cholesterol!. You can lower that number by beginning a low cholesterol diet, start eating high fiber, but primarily OATS, and exercise!. In diabetic patients, it was just discovered that cinnamon lowered their LDL, so it doesn't hurt to eat 1/4 tsp!. per day, on top of oatmeal, on your latte, etc!. Eat bread with oatbran, and Cheerios!. It will take quite a while to do it this way, but in the long run, is the healthiest option!. Other things you need to cut back:
only eat 3 eggs yolks per week(egg whites are great)
lay off whole milk, and cheese (switch to skim, reduced fat cheese)
No cream or cream based sauces!. If you eat icecream, make sure it's "light" or frozen yogurt
Pull the skin off chicken, and trim off all visable fat!.
Lay off marbled meats, and opt for lean cuts, such as london broil, or flank steak

Now for your HDL, your "good cholesterol"!. Raising this number can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease!. You can raise your HDL by swiitching to olive oil, eating nuts (a small handful per day) such as almonds, walnuts, peanuts!. Eat avacados, and most importantly, add fish to your diet if it's not already!. You should eat fish for dinner about 3 times a week!. The fatty fishes are best, such as salmon, herring, and sardines, but all fish is good!. And don't worry about shrimp!.!.it has both good and bad cholesterol, so they even out!.

And lastly, begin taking fish oil!. 2 capsules a day will help your HDL and triglycerides!. Try adding flaxseeds too!.!.they are heart healthy!. I believe you can grind them up and add to baked goods(to sneak them in)!.

Good luck!.!.I hope it all works out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. My husband is in your boat and I am borderline myself!. Our doctor says we should eat:

Anything with flax seed and take a flax seed oil supplement,
Drink a glass of red wine in the evening and drink purple grape juice (it has a certain nutrient that helps eliminate ldl cholesterol)
Eat lots of oatmeal!. (e-mail me for a terrific recipe for overnight steel-cut oats in the crockpot)
Beans, especially black beans,
Also eat fish like salmon and mackerel, and
Blueberries, walnuts, spinach, olive oil, and most things vegetable, fruit and whole grain!.

It will help! But if your cholesterol is really high, you may also have a genetic tendency to it and all the dietary changes will help but not be enough without medication!. My husband is on one now with no ill affects!. The fact is, the high cholesterol is more dangerous than the medication to lower it!.

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I know one in particular that is really good!.
Avocados!.

From what I have read, there is Good cholesterol and Bad!.
What the avocado has is the Good kind!. SO when you eat it, it goes into your blood system and acts like a sort of magnet that the bad cholesterol attaches itself to!. This is then flushed out of your system!.

When selecting your avocados, make sure they are nice and ripe, yet firm!.!. sort of how you like to eat your pears!. I love to put mine in the fridge and have it with any meal!. Some like to chill it, and cut it in half, sprinkle some vinaigrette!.!.!. grab a spoon and you are good to go!.

I also heard that almonds are good but not the salted ones!. The natural ones you can buy at the bulk food stores!. Good snack and it lowers your bad cholesterol!.

May our Lord preserve you brother!.!.!. spirit, soul and body unto His return!. ( 1 Thess 5:23)

!.!.!.!. oh!.!. and remember to exercise:)

Love ya in Christ

Foods to avoid - those high in saturated fats (cholesterol hangs out with these)!. Foods high in saturated fats include fatty meats (go for fish, lean cuts, trim the fat), full fat cheese and milk & milk products (go for the skim options), pastry type foods!. In America trans fats also quite a problem (in Australia these really are negligable - less hydrogenation of the food supply)!.

Foods to reduce cholesterol - phytosterols, they are in the over prices margarines, also in vegetable oils (go for olive), smaller amounts in nuts (also contain good fat NOT saturated fats) and in fruit & veg!.
Go for high fibre foods - whole grain bread/ pasta/rice, lots of fruit and veg (this will also give you some phytosterols), bran
Pick the good fats (polyunsaturated & monounsaturated) - walnuts, hazelnuts, avocado, peanuts
Oats - they contain beta-glucan and this is shown to lower cholesterol (need alot, have it with skim milk :) and a banana!)

Check out the American Heart Foundation and the Australian Heart Foundation (I think they have more info on cholesterol!)!. Look out the resources below!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Here is some solid information based on evidence based medical studies:
http://www!.uptodate!.com/patients/content!.!.!.

Under "Nutritional supplements", there are several excellent suggestions!.

Understand this, though:
The most effective cholesterol medications (called "Statins") do a great job of lowering your cholesterol (much better than dietary methods)!. There are two of them that are on the Wal-mart $4 list (i!.e!. would only cost you $4 a month)!. The best of the two is Pravastatin!.

Yes, in a very small number of people, these statins can impact the liver!. HOWEVER:
1) It is in a very small number of people
2) You can easily get a simple blood lab test every 3-6 months to check your liver enzymes to see if they are going up
3) If the liver enzymes are going up, you can very easily discontinue to the statins
4) The impact on the liver is insignificant and completely reversible with no long term impact

The only real danger is taking the statins for years and years without checking the liver out!. If this is done, a very small number of people *might* cause some significant liver damage!.

Plus, understand this, the first statin was found in some type of wild red rice!. So, if you were to figure out what kind of rice this was, exactly, and eat enough of it, it wouldn't be so different than taking a pill, which simply extracts this chemical from the rice so you don't have to eat a bag of it every day!. Consider that!

Besides, all medicines are "natural" in the sense that all things on this planet have been created by God!. So many Christians I know have become too anti-medicine and pro-"natural", and it is absurd!. A lot of the over-the-counter herbs and supplements are more dangerous than prescription medications because they are not regulated by the FDA!.

And my pet peeve is seeing hyper-charismatic Christians who throw away all of their medicines for diabetes and hypertension, and "claim in faith" to be healed of these diseases!. They come back to see me and their BP and blood sugars are through the roof!. Sadly, they condemn themselves for "not having enough faith", as they are condemned at their churches!. This is evil!. God can and DOES heal people of sickness and disease, and I have seen it!. But He doesn't ALWAYS do it!. It is a matter of His grace, not our "faith"!.!.!.as if we had a little "faith bell" we could ring and get whatever we want, making God our butler - as if He were our servant! How evil is that!?! God is God!. Yes, faith is necessary, but it is not necessarily sufficient to "get what we want"!. It is, tahnkfully, sufficient for salvation, the forgiveness of our sins, and eternal life!.

Finally,
Ask that pesky insurance agency for the actual results of your blood test!. The bottom line is that they have ranges of "normal" for all sorts of lab values that have no clinically significant value!. If one of these values is "flagged" then your premium will go up and you are considered "high risk"!. When, many times, it is a bunch of garbage from a medical perspective (happened to me, personally!)!.

And as others have said, see a doctor and get a complete fasting lipid profile!. And since you are concerned about your liver function, ask your doctor to get a baseline hepatic (liver) panel so you have something to compare with, should you choose to take a statin!. While you are at it, might as well get a complete metabolic profile with a CBC and TSH!. Most of these tests should (*might*) be included as a preventative visit by your medical insurance!.

If your cholesterol comes out normal, then call your insurance company and ask for a re-test!. And hopefully they told you, but make sure you are not eating a bunch of greasy food (no fast food) for the week leading up to the test, and definitely no food at all for the 8 hours prior to the lab draw itself!.

-

Grace and peace in Christ!.
