you got some pretty super answers already. i just have to agree with some of the answerees before me :)
swimming. swimming and walking. i had a disc hernia 3 years ago, and my physiotherapist said that that's the best.
swimming and walking (invest in a GREAT SPECIAL pair of shoes for walking, make sure they're with air cussions), and eventually running if you can.
