Answers:
It's a personal thing!.

I've been a vegetarian since I was 19yrs old (1992) and it still astounds me that people care so much about what I eat!.

I couldn't care less if you sit next to me and eat a steak; it's a personal choice and I don't push my choices on anyone!. Yet not a week goes by (and I'm not exaggerating) without someone making some judgment or giving me unsolicited advice!. Examples:
1) "You can eat fish; fish aren't animals!." (Why in the world would someone tell me what I "can" eat!? I can eat whatever the hell I want!.!.!. if I wanted to eat fish, beef, poultry, etc!. I WOULD EAT IT!. Vegetarianism is VOLUNTARY!.)
2) "Vegetables are alive too!.!.!. you're killing them when you yank them from the ground!." (What does this have to do with whether or not I prefer to eat flesh!?)
3) "You're a hypocrite; when you walk around you kill millions of microscopic animals so you can't say you aren't killing animals just because you're a vegetarian!." (I know this makes no sense but I just wanted to give you a laugh!.!.!. someone actually said this to me out of the blue; we weren't even talking about food or vegetarianism!. LOL!)

Those are just three examples of ridiculous things said to me, but in all honesty my personal choices are commented on almost daily for no apparent reason!.

Since you seem to be thinking the issue through, I'll tell you that I choose to be a vegetarian because I believe that animals have souls, and I believe that plants do not have souls!. Based on this belief I choose not to kill an animal (and buying prepared meat is equivalent to killing it!.!.!. contrary to popular belief, animals don't fillet themselves and then hurl themselves onto styrofoam for our convenience!. LOL)

In general, when I'm asked why I'm a vegetarian, I don't give the real answer anymore, because 9 times out of 10 it is followed by either an eye roll or a remark like, "Carrots have feeling too, you know!" Instead, I just say that I'm a vegetarian not because of animals, but because I hate plants, and therefore I want to spend as much energy as I have available killing (by eating) as many plants as I can!. Usually I get a laugh and we all move on with our day!. :-)

A word of caution: Why would you even invite any conversation about how someone's personal choice is "silly!?" Isn't that, in and of itself, silly!? LOL

Good luck with your speech!.

Add: I hope that lilly (the poster above me) has read this!. As I've pretty much indicated, very many omnivores do not "respect" vegetarians!. I don't think lilly realizes that the disrespect really does go both ways!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Personally, i am not one, although I think its a pretty good idea!.
I try to steer clear of all the "animal rights" videos though!.
I'd rather not distrub myself!.
The only thing that bugs me is when vegetarians sort of shove it in your face!.
Like, your eating meat and they're all "Ewww, how can you eat that"
As long as they respect people who eat meat, like we respect them, I completely support it!.
I've considered doing it, but never really acted on it!.
Maybe someday :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

You have to eat meat for protein, but there are other ways of getting protein besides meat!. We have meat for a reason, to survive! Not eating meat isn't going to stop them from killing animals!. Its either your disgusted by meat and the thought of it or sad for the animals, either way its not stopping them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've been a vegetarian since the day I was born, and I wouldn't change for anything!. Pros: Very healthy, great for the animals!. Cons: Hmm!.!.!.!.well, you just have to be conscious about what you eat!.

It's very healthy, and just a good choice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think it's silly , most vegetarians don't want to hurt animals but the way I see it is why care, If we didn't eat them they'd just harm us!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i think it is great to think about what substances feed our bodies!. i am not a vegetarian but do respect them and their commitment to their vegetarian lifestyleWww@Answer-Health@Com

I wish I had the willpower to be one because I have never met an overweight vegetarian!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
