Today I was at the gym running on a treadmill and my heart rate was up to 176?!

Question:

Today I was at the gym running on a treadmill and my heart rate was up to 176?

how bad is that and what are the long term effects? I'm trying to run 5 mile everyother day. I take breaks inbetween each mile to come my heart rate down. But still 178 my vains were poping out of my forhead.

Answers:

Yes, I'm afraid the young woman at the top is incorrect, and I say that as a healthcare provider (RN). A heart rate of 170+ is not bad in most cases, however the caveat is that I do not know your medical history. If you personally are not comfortable with a heart rate that high; as a result of discomfort I assume? I would recommend possibly easing off a bit by taking 3 miles as stated above, and simply don't try to make record time. Many times, fitness is about taking things at a comfortable rate. Often we forget to listen to our bodies, but if it doesn't feel right you must alter the bahavior. Hope this was helpful.
