Question: I need to lose weight, and firm up!?
My name is Kaitlyn, and im 14!. Im about 5'4 & I weigh like 118 pounds!. I dance,and I do have some muscle, so weight isn't a big issue!. But I just dont like my figure, I need to tighten up!. I want to lose my love handles, gain nice thighs, and gain nice abs!. Im taking a class before the season starts up, but it's once a week!. I would like anything you can give me, I would really appreciate it!.

Hey Kaitlyn! Here are some tips to get in shape and get healthy:

1!. Eat a healthy breakfast every single morning! If you eat a balanced breakfast (not sugary cereals or a pop-tart) you will prevent your body from going into starvation mode, which will eventually lead to weight gain!.

2!. Exercise for at least 10 minutes every single day! Any kind of cardio, strength training, or stretching for just 10 minutes will help prevent all sorts of health problems, along with helping you get into shape!. Keep in mind that 5 times a week you should be getting at least 30 minutes of exercise, but if you are pressed for time, or are feeling lazy at least 10 minutes will help a lot!

3!. Write down your body goals, and put them where you can see them every single day! This will help remind you of what you want to do!.

4!. Make smart substitutes for unhealthy foods!. Try using a vinegarette instead of ranch dressing, eat a whole wheat English muffin instead of a bagle, use mustard instead of mayo (or simply go for no condiments at all if you can handle it) and always go for whole wheat instead of white! Also try eating a fruit or veggie instead of junk food!.

5!. Make a morning fitness routine, so nothing else gets in the way!. Wake up 10 minutes earlier and do your 10 minutes of exercise before school!. When you get home, if you're up to it all you have to do is 20 more minutes and you're done!

6!. Keep a water bottle with you all day!. A lot of times when you're feeling munchy it's because you're thirsty!. Also, stop drinking soda pop and other sugary drinks!. I know a guy who lost 30 pounds just from doing that!. (of course, you won't lose that much because you don't have 30 pounds to lose, hahaha!. But it will really help flatten out your belly!.)

7!. Find a fitness/diet buddy!. Tell them that you're trying to get healthier and that you need them to help you stay in check!. Tell them every single day of what you've done, so you know that you CAN'T screw up without someone knowing!.

8!. Make at least 3 healthy recipes a week instead of just eating snacks, or eating out!. Plus, it's a great way to learn how to cook or help out your mom!

9!. Pack snacks ahead of time!. In little containers or baggies put olives, baby carrots, slices of apple or low-fat cheese, celery sticks or other healthy snacks!. Also keep low-fat yogurt on hand!. That way you can just grab them when you're hungry and you won't even look at junk food!.

10!. Get on youtube!.com and look up sparkpeople!. They have some great exercise videos that will really help you! Right now they are posting a new 7 day swimsuit bootcamp video every day!. Just do one of the videos every day!. I'm doing it right now!. We are currently on day 4!. Some are harder than others, but they are all good for beginners!. If you feel like you can do more then just repeat the video!.

Loosing weight fast is always an unhealthy thing!.
There are many diets who tell you that you can loose a lot of weight in no time!. And it is working, but you are doing no good to your body!. And there's also the Jojo-effect!.
The best thing to loose and hold a healthy weight is healthy food, less sugar, lots of drinking water, and sports!.
Diet has to begin in your head!. And you already started to think about your nutrition!. That's an important step!. It is too easy just to make a magazine-diet for 2-3 weeks and loose some weight!. But it will come back soon again!. If you are over-thinking your nutrition and activity, you will have a constantly good result!. Isn't that much better and healthier than a crash-diet !?

Kaitlyn, it's really good that you're aware and consciously making decisions to stay fit/healthy!.

When I was your age, I didn't have to worry about it!. If I could do it all over again, I would've instilled better habits!.

Some habits/exercises you can develop:
1!. Try doing pilates!. It REALLY trims your thighs!.

2!. Walk at least 20-30 minutes 5 days a week!. The more, the better!.

3!. Eat protein- it keeps you full for longer periods of time!.

4!. Have some cards- do NOT eliminate it all!. Carbs provide essential nutrients for your brain!.

5!. Take multi-vitamins/calcium/omega-3 supplements!.

6!. Enjoy healthy fats- low fat dairy products (like low fat yogurt- which not only helps you to stay slim but also enhances your skin elasticity)!. Allow yourself one slice of cheese!. Canola/grape seed/olive oil make excellent sources for healthy fats!. Keep it at a moderation!.

7!. Eat salmon- which is high in selenium andit helps to build immunity, hence, protects you from getting sick!.

I've been doing pilates for the past 3 months!. My body is better than it was at age 16 (not that it was bad, I'm just much more defined, plus, I'm petite in general)!.

If I had known that I should've created these habits at your age, it would've saved me a lot of time spent on feeling physically weak, tired (due to spikes of sugar levels)!.
