there are many different ways to do pushups, no way is the best!. it all depend on what part of your body you want to workout!. pushups generally workout the chest, triceps (back of arms) and shoulders!. different pushups put more emphasis on any combonation of these 3 muscles!. here are some of the numerous types and what they work:

Hands close - inner chest and triceps
Hands shoulder width apart - chest

pushups on the floor - lower chest
pushups with your feet elevated - upper chest
pushups in handstand position - shoulders

fist pushups - upper chest, shoulders and triceps
finger pushups - strengthens fingers

one handed pushups - balance, chest, arms, and core (abs) stability
clapping pushups - speed
pushups with feet or hands on a ball - balance and stability

then you can do pushups slow or fast!. in your body you have 2 types of muscle fibers: slow twitch and fast twitch!. neither type is better, it all depends on how you want to workout!.

slow twitch fibers: more numerous (weaker, more endurance) and get worked by doing the exercise slowly!. used for slow, steady strength: lifting!.

fast twitch fibers: less numerous (stronger, less endurance) and get worked out by doing the exercise faster!. used for building a muscles speed: punching!.

all these types of pushups can be combined
EXE: close-hand, fast, elevated feet pushup!. this will work the speed and mass of the upper-inner chest and triceps!.

Pushups are faaaaantastic!. No pushup is the "best!." Every different pushup does something different!. Close in hands (in a triangle) work the middle of your chest, wider hands will target your shoulders more!. Bringing the hands in low and to your sides will allow you to target your triceps more than your shoulders, and pulling your shoulders back to keep them from participating in the motion will also work the triceps as well as hitting hard at the stabilizing muscles of your core and back!.

As to slow or fast, this completely depends on what you want!. Slow builds slow, steady strength and works on muscle mass!. Doing them fast will work on your explosiveness!. Depending on what you want to do (throw punches or carry heavy rocks!?) you'll want to concentrate on one or the other!. A wrestler who needs slow, cleaving strength also needs to explode, so he's gotta have both kinds!.

What's more, one handed pushups are excellent exercises and work almost your entire body thanks to the amount of stability needed!. Just start with your legs as wide as necessary to have a steady base and as you get better at doing them move your legs in!.

Want more fun!? Do a pushup on a ball or some other thing that requires you to balance!. Your entire midsection will be forced into action in order to stabilize your body!.

The best way to figure which muscles and how much they are worked by different types of pushups is just to do the pushups and see what starts hurting, but always remember to listen to your body!. Sharp pains and chronic pains means you're doing something wrong, and pushups, especially inclined ones, can cause your shoulders harm if you do them wrong!.

Instead of going fast, I would do each pushup a slow methodical exercise to make sure your form is good!. The hand spacing or position of your body can help to build up different muscle groups!.
Hands close together works the triceps more!.
Feet on a bed works the deltoids more!.
Hands in fists just means a longer distance to push up 'til your arms are straight!.
It's a good idea to change it up a little!. It builds more muscle groups and is not so monotonous!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
