Question: Gaining muscle but want to lose weight!?
Weight training class at the beginning of the semester 1-16-08:
Weight 165!.7 lbs
Body Fat % 38!.1

Weight training class at the end of the semester 5-5-08:
Weight 170!.5
Body Fat % 33!.5

I'm female, age 50, and 5' 6"!. So I gained weight during the class but lost body fat!. That's good because the weight gained was muscle, not fat!. However, shouldn't I at some point, start losing weight!? I use fitday to track what I eat and my calories consumed are between 1300 and 1700!. I do cardio 4 times a week (exercise bike) for 30 minutes to one hour depending on how much time I have!. I should be losing weight, but I'm not!.
I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor to see if there's some medical reason for it!. I have to pay my own way through college so I'd like to keep the doctor visits to a minimum!. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what questions I should ask her or what types of tests I should request!? Thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you want to lose weight you should focus a bit more on cardio!. Vary your exercise!. If you're on your bike for a half hour to an hour at a constant rate yeah you'll get steadily tired but you won't be challenging your body!. If you can put it on a "hilly" course then I would do that!. Vary the speeds and the effort that you need to put in!.

Really though--vary your routine to get the maximum benefit from your cardio workout!.

I wouldn't even go to the doctor's to be honest!. As you get older your body tends to lose its ability to slough off weight quickly!. It's that whole you need to have enough energy to host a brood of your offspring biological mechanism kicking in!.

If you ARE going to go to the doctor's I would bring a schedule of what your common eating practices are like and ask them to check your thyroid (though I doubt you have a thyroid condition since you didn't complain of either constant tiredness or pain if you don't eat every hour) and blood sugar for diabetes (but that's also probably not a problem)!. If you're worried about it at all then GO by all means but look at your workout too!.

Honestly I'd take a look at your workout!. Weight training is good for toning and building muscle but cardio is the way to go to actually lose weight!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Using weight as a rule adds "Weight", please note you did convert some fat tissue to mussels tissue, but volume per volume mussels weigh much more then fat, so this is why you gain weight it was at best very healthy gain and if you are feeling fine then you need not worry, need to reduce cal in take a little and increase the exercises routine a little or make them more vigorous!.

You must count calories and at least in initial stages write down what you are going to eat and when then stay on that list!. Your total calories for the week must not exceed, 1500 x 7 = 10,500 calories this will give you leave way to indulge at special occasions like wedding and parties, but you must write down what you eat and account for the calories latter and adjust the total intake next week!.

If you are not too old, then best way to reduce your weight is to increase your height!.

Vegetarians have a big advantage, in loosing weight, it cost less and they can satisfy the hunger more easily, some vegetables have only 1 calorie per pound, so they can fill themselves up with it before enjoying each meal, and never go hungry!.

Most people should take one a day water soluble multi-vitamins when on this program; they can be purchased at the pharmacy near you!.

Most people put on weight after age 40!.

Any way before you try any thing, see a doctor to rule out any abnormalities (Hormone, Pituitary)!.

Remember it is ten times easier to put on the weight then to take it off!.

You seem to think that "losing weight" is automatically good for you!. But why !? What kind of body tissue do you think you should be getting rid of, and how would getting rid of it improve your health or your physical ability!?

To answer your first question: no, you should not be losing weight!.

Losing stored bodyfat can often make you healthier and more capable, and most people believe (wrongly, as you have discovered) that weight gain or loss is related to the amount of fat they are storing or releasing from storage!.

Adding extra muscle tissue to your body can also improve your health and capabilities!. This will also improve your appearance, by smoothly stretching out any fat that might be stored in your skin, so that you look more streamlined and graceful!.

If you focus on your improved ability, and take pride in the achievements it allows, the extra muscle tissue will keep burning additional bodyfat (but only during GENTLE movements; vigorous activity is powered by sugar), and this will eventually reduce your bodyfat %age even more!.

You could request that the physician refers you to see a Clinical Dietician!. This nutritional professional will be able to explain more about the relationship between your diet, your physical activity, and your body composition!.
