My wife is stuck at her current weight and regardless of diet or exercise can't !

Question:

My wife is stuck at her current weight and regardless of diet or exercise can't seem to pass it - any thoughts

She weighs about 147 currently - and has lost about 15 pounds since starting to diet and exercise (6 months ago). She eats pretty well for the most part and drinks a ton of water every day. We usually exercise about 5 times a week. We started with weight training and cardio three days a week and then we do an aggressive walk (30 - 40 minutes) the other two or three days a week. She did weight watchers which initially helped but is just stuck in a rut. We eat pretty healthy but will go out a couple of times a week for dinner. I am out of ideas to what can help get her past this rut...if I was a guessing person, her frame could probably be a comfortable 130 - 135 lbs (where she would look healthy and fit) anything less I think would be too light for her body. Her problem areas are under arms and thighs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking about just going to all cardio, but I don't know...please help. Thanks!!!

Answers:

Your wife's and your exercise and dieting plan sound very good and it sounds as though your wife has hit a plateau in her weight.

This is normal. As her body gets used to the exercise and her new lower weight it starts to create a new barometer for her frame. Although many people feel frustrated during plateaus because it seems that no matter what they do they stay at the same weight and the same shape but actually plateaus are wonderful.

This is why. When someone eats what they like and doesn't really exercise they find that they gain weight but usually just up to a certain point. It then stays there for a while then goes up to the next level. Each time that they stay at one weight it is because their body is creating a new barometer for their body ( a new level).

In your wife's case she is setting a new barometer for her lower weight. Once she is there about 3 weeks her weight should then start to lower again. You can break out of a plateau by changing around her workouts but then she'll hit the same plateau again. It's best if she keeps doing exactly what she is doing now but to avoid the scale for 2-3 weeks. Have her look to see how her clothes fit. They make continue to become loser yet the scale wouldn't track the change.

Have her add in a bit of hand weight workouts for her arms during this plateau time. By switching her mind over to her arms she may completely forget about hitting the scale.

As frustrating as plateaus are they are really something to celebrate!
