Question:

What are the components of fitness? And how can a 40 yr old who does not exercise develop them?

Answers:

I am 41 and I started a fitness program about 2 years ago. Only now do I feel that I am in reasonable shape after years of effort. First of all, you need to work on flexibility: the hamstrings are the first to go as you get older. You should stretch all your muscles, but concentrate on the hamstrings and the back (a lot of flexibility in your legs actually comes from the back). Cardio is also a basic. You should not rush with this. Work on it slowly. Start with cycling and walking. A long light workout is worth more than a short intense one.

Strength is good for overall fitness and helps prevent injuries. Again, you should start slowly with small weights.

I started jumping rope about 6 months ago and at first it was exhausting. Even 2 minutes left me shaken and exhausted! Now I can jump rope for 15 minutes (with short breaks) and don't even feel winded.

Bodyweight exercises are something you can start on slowly. Look them up on wikipedia. They can be done anywhere. You don't need to join a gym if you do them.

If you practise a sport, it can help you to develop balance, speed, and coordination, which are also components of fitness.

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking or if this addresses your query. I hope it helps.
