Carbohydrate 101
A carbohydrate is simply a chain of sugars!. They can be complex or long chained sugars as found in pastas and grains!. They can be simple or short chained sugars as found in fruits!.

Carbohydrates are your bodies first source of energy!. When you go for a walk, get up out of bed, do a sudoku puzzle, do any type of physical or mental activity your body uses carbs to fuel those actions!. If you sit and do no activity, but still eat carbs, then your body says "I don't need this energy right now, so I'll store it for later!." So the way the body puts carbs in long term storage is by linking them together and forming what we call "fat!."

If your body is active and it does not have enough carbs to fuel itself then it will get energy out of its storage tanks "fat!." Thus by consuming less carbs, your body will start to burn its fat stores!. Keep in mind that your brain needs carbs as well and your fat stores take awhile to be accessed and utilized, so carbs should never be completely eliminated from your diet for long periods of time!. You will notice your brain slow down if you have a low carb intake for a long period of time!.

If you are not physically active cutting carbs will just keep you from storing more fat, you won't burn any fat!. Your body needs to use energy in order to access your fat!.

Simple versus complex!. Simple carbs are found in fruits and candy!. Candy is another topic!. It is bad carbs and you don't need it, so just stay away!. Since the simple carbs are small, they are easier for your body to break apart and use, so they are utilized as your first source of energy!. The complex carbs, such as pasta, take more time to break down and the energy release is slower than simple carbs, so your body utiziles this energy source next!. Fat takes much longer to break down, so it is utilized as the next source of energy!.

Note that if your body is running low on fat stores, or doing too much activity without enough carbs, then your body can't access the fat fast enough so it will utilize protein as energy!. Protein is stored in muscle tissue!. So you would lose muscle mass if you do not eat enough fats and carbs!.

It is better to eat a majority of your simple carbs in the morning such as fruit to jump start your energy!. Then eat the majority of the complex carbs morning to afternoon!. Then avoid carbs like the plague in the evening to bed time!. When you go to sleep, your metabolism slows down!. Any carbs that were not already burned will still be there!. Your body will say "I can't use this energy yet, so I will store it for later!." Protein and foods such as yogurt and cottage cheese are excellent before bed, because by the time your body processes these foods you will be awake again!.

Finally, your carb intake depends on your activity level and metabolic rate!. The more active you are, the more carbs you need!. A nutritionist should be consulted if you want to know the exact amount for your particular body type and activity level!.

As an average about 10%-15% of your daily caloric intake can be removed in the form of carbs!. Example: If you eat an average of 2500 calories per day of protein, fat, and carbs, then eliminate around 300 total calories in just the carbohydrate category and leave the fat and protein intake the same!. It is recommended that you do this for 6 days and spend one day eating more carbs than normal!. This way your body will know that there is a surplus of food available and does not need to hang on to your emergency fat stores!. If you are active you should be able to lose about 2 lbs!. per week!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
