My husband is extremly overweight?

some friends of ours are pushing my husband to have gastric bypass surgery and i am not sure which way to go with this is there any advice i can hear? thank u and god bless...

Well meaning as your friends might be, they have a funny way of showing their concern. Gastric bypass surgery is a serious thing, and it shouldn't ever be something that a person is pushed into. There is a risk of death during the surgery, and from infections later on. It's also not a magic bullet, because while it restricts the appetite for a period of time, the person is still responsible for changing his diet and increasing his exercise habits. Anyone I've seen interviewed on t.v. has said the surgery only forces you to change you eating habits at first, and that your remaining stomach area will just stretch again if you overeat. Gastric bypass can be a life saver for extremely obese people, but should only be done as a last resort if your husband has exhausted every other method and still is unable to lose. He wouldn't be a good candidate for the surgery unless he was mentally and emotionally ready to go through it. Your "friends" would do far better to offer support to your husband in different ways. Go for a walk with him, just a short distance at first, every evening. Enlist the help of your doctor and local weight loss support groups. Check out local exercise options, like water aerobics that minimize impact on the joints but still provide a workout. Get good, solid information from reliable sources on healthy ways to lose weight. And you can support your husband at home, as well, by not purchasing or preparing unhealthy food, by starting good healthy habits yourself so he has a partner in his struggle, and by not enabling his bad habits.
