Junk food can be ridiculously tempting. If you're serious about quitting, there are a couple of good ways to go.

Cut-the-Junk Tip 1: Cut down slowly.
Do you race to the vending machine between classes to get your "fix" of junk food? If you're really stuck on junky nibbles, it may be easier for you to cut down your habit gradually, instead of quitting "cold turkey". This is all about setting realistic goals. Commit to a slow and steady approach to quitting. Let's say you’ve got the will to wean yourself from chocolate bars and chips, but you crave them every time there's a break between classes. For one week, try to allow yourself just one junk food snack a day, maybe after you've eaten your lunch. The next week, you can cut back to every other day. And so on, until you're junk-snack free.

Cut-the-Junk Tip 2: Change your habits.
Do you find yourself snacking on junk whenever you watch TV? If the boob tube makes you eat mindlessly, it's time to switch off the set. It's easy to eat way more than you mean to, when you're zoned out in front of the TV. To get control of your eating habits, do something else after dinner, preferably something that keeps your hands busy. Think playing video/computer games, knitting, etc.

Cut-the-Junk Tip 3: Trick your taste buds.
Often, according to experts, we don't crave a specific food - we crave a texture or flavor. For instance, you might not need to eat potato chips - just something crunchy, or salty. Next time you have the urge to splurge your daily calories on junk food, ask yourself what you are really craving. Do you want something sweet? Skip the chocolate pudding and try a bagel with light cream cheese and strawberry jam (tastes like cheesecake!) or a cup of instant light hot chocolate. Is it something crunchy you crave? Munch on some yummy baked tortilla chips instead of regular corn chips, and pair them with salsa instead of sour cream. Satisfy salt cravings with pretzels (they're low in fat and calories) instead of chips. If it's ice cream you want, try a low-fat frozen yogurt bar.

Cut-the-Junk Tip 4: Make sure you're eating enough.
Do you have a constant case of the nibbles? It could be that you're always craving a snack, because you're not eating enough at meals. Quit starving yourself! Trying to lose weight by drastically cutting down on portion sizes, or cutting out whole food groups (like bread or all carbs), will never work, if you're so hungry that you binge on junk food at night, or between mealtimes. Eat sensibly, and make sure your meals include foods from all the major food groups (proteins, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy, healthy fats). Learn all you can about how to eat healthfully, and make it your mission to get all the energy, vitamins and minerals you need from your food. When you eat properly, and satisfy your body's hunger for real food, it won't crave crap. It's that simple.

Cut-the-Junk Tip 5: Make it about money.
What if skipping junk food could earn you big bucks? It sort of can! Get a jar and label it "Junk Food Fund". Each time you want to buy junk food, put that money in the jar instead. It's a great way to build savings, since you'd be spending the money anyway - so you won't miss it by putting it aside. When you see how easy it is to stockpile cash by laying off the junk food, you'll have motivation to stick to your new, healthier habits. Bonus: You can go buy a new outfit with the money you saved!

Cut-the-Junk Tip 6: Watch your emotions.
Are you reaching for a sugary soda, when what you really need is a shoulder to lean on? That mental craving to eat junk food (that you can get even when you are not physically hungry) is not uncommon. Many people eat to fill a need other than hunger, like loneliness, boredom, sadness, frustration, to put off doing something like schoolwork, or other reasons. Try to think about what it is you are not getting emotionally that would make you a happier person. If you can figure out what "hole" in your heart you are trying to fill with junk food, you can take care of the real issue and not to "fix" it by stuffing yourself with garbage.
