Answers:

Well, first of all - how tall are you? What is your Body Mass Index? What is your body fat percentage? Do you get your period regularly? You would have to be pretty tiny or an Olympic gymnast for 85 lbs. to be a "healthy" weight, which makes me wonder if you have led a healthy lifestyle up until now. Providing that you do not (as improbable as it seems) require counseling for any type of eating or body image disorder, I would start off by saying that it is important to know what is considered healthy for your body type before you go off and start chowing down calories. There are many online calculators which can help you with this.

That said, remember that it is not the number on the scale that matters - it is how you LOOK and FEEL. If you feel like you would like to gain weight, judge your progress by the mirror, not by the scale, and stop when you have acquired the look you want. Remember that to look your best, you will want to acquire a balanced amount of fat AND muscle, and so your weight-gain process should include an appropriate amount of exercise and weight training - three or four times a week.

Simple things you can do to increase your caloric intake without "pigging out" or consuming crazy amounts of fat and sugar: add healthy nuts like almonds to your salad or morning cereal, switch from skim to 1% milk, buy salsa with beans instead of just tomatoes, add some peanut butter to your apple slices or celery sticks, drizzle a little butter and sprinkle parmesan cheese on your popcorn or steamed veggies, etc. . . . all of these ideas will up the caloric value of your food and still provide important nutrients, fiber, and especially protein, which you will need to build your new muscles!

I hope these ideas help you feel happy with your body.
