Why does popcorn lose its nutritional value when you pop it?!

Question:

Why does popcorn lose its nutritional value when you pop it?

I RARELY, if ever, eat popcorn. However, there is a food shortage in my house. lol. So I decided to have some popcorn for dinner. I wasnt going to have a lot, but after not having some for a while, adding a dash of garlic, it tasted so good! so i ate the full bag. (Yes, a full bag eaten by myself) I am on a diet, so i was reading the label. It said 110 cals for 3 tbsp. unpopped, and 1 cup popped had 35 calories. It said there were 2.5 servings per bag. and with the popcorn being popped, it lost all iron percentage and the daily % of fats changed from 5 to 2??? why is this... how can it lose value. although the loss of fat is good, cause its yummier popped!

Answers:

I adore popcorn, too. Try it with parmesan cheese.

Popping the popcorn DOES NOT change the nutritional value. The label is confusing. Each serving is measured as 3 tablespoons. Each tablespoon of kernels corresponds to about 1 c of popped popcorn.

So what was 5% (in 3 tablespoons) has been divided by 3 which gives you 1.7 - or 2%. Do you get it? The amount of iron must have been very small, so that when it was divided by 3, it gave an answer very close to 0.

Hope this helps clarify. And - keep eating popcorn, it's a fairly healthy treat.
