When is the best time of day to drink a protein shake. Are you supposed to drink them before training or after, early in the morning or last thing at night?

Ideally, you should drink a shake twice a day. The key to getting the most out of your supplements is absorption, because a certain percentage of the shake you drink is just discarded and never absorbed by your body. If you don't want to consume 2 shakes a day, which is perfectly understandable, the best thing to do is make a shake in the morning, drink half then, throw it in the fridge and drink the other half before you go to bed. Your body will absorb MUCH more protein this way.
