Answers:

There's plenty of us that still do Atkins or another low-carb diet. I've been doing it for the past two years and have no intention of going back to my old way of eating.

I think that the main reason you don't hear much about Atkins any more is that there's no commercial interest in it. Dr. Atkins is gone. Atkins Nutritionals is no longer owned by the family and has gone more mainstream because there's more money in. The problem is that Atkins and low-carb diets mainly focus on real, whole, natural foods rather than processed foods. At the height of the low-carb craze there were lots of companies trying to get rich with low carb products, but they found that serious low carbers are not interested in fake foods, and the people who do use the processed substitue foods don't really tend to be serious about following any diet. So the big food companies really have nothing to market to the majority of low-carbers, we don't want their processed crap foods. Atkins is about a healthy new lifestyle, not about substituting low carb crap for regular crap.

However, researchers are looking at low-carb diets and finding out that they ARE healthy, they ARE better for weight loss, they ARE easier to stick to than a low-fat or low-calorie diet (heck, even Dean Ornish admitted to this last point).
