Question:

Is the urban myth true... that birth control pills make you gain weight? (more to the question below)?

I'm getting married in less than a year and fear that if I start on the pill now, I won't be able to fit into the dress when the date comes. Is the myth true or are there ways to avoid the weight gain?

Answers:

Weight gain is listed on the possible side effects for birth control. Most women that I know have not experienced it. From my personal experience, when I first started them, I felt sick and tired, and sometimes eating some crackers or something would help ease the queasiness. This only lasted for a month or two and my body seemed to adjust and regulate itself, and I did not experience any weight gain. I don't think that if you were someone more susceptible to this side effect that it would be such a dramatic difference that you couldn't fit into your dress. if you do gain weight, it will probably be 5 pounds or less, and you should have time to take it off when your body is used to the hormonal changes that the pill has brought on. Trust me, it is best to already be on it and adjusted before the big day.
