Is it possible to over-hydrate your body?!

Question: Is it possible to over-hydrate your body!?
I am on a weight-gain plan for building muscle that suggests that I take in about a gallon of water per day!.

I recently had someone tell me that you can over-hydrate your body!. I've never heard of this, but is that really possible!? I've always been under the impression that your body just gets rid of what it doesn't need!. If this is true, about how much would you have to take in to make that happen and what symptoms would you look for!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Taking in to much fluids can cause hyperhydration, water intoxication!. This causes fluid shifts!. Water is hypotonic (contains less molecules than normal fluids in the body)and causes fluid and salt to enter cells!. The cells can eventually burst!. The decreased salt in the blood can cause severe complications such as seizure, coma or even death!.

Initial symptoms are light headedness that may or may not be accompanied with nausea, vomiting, headache, or malaise (a generally not feeling good type of thing) !.

One gallon of water is equal to about 4 liters!. If you drink this throughout the day, it probably won't cause problems!. If you were to drink it in a very short time period - it could!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm not sure about the signs and symptoms, but I can tell you that other than not getting carried away with the H20, you should be sure that you are consuming enough sugar and salt!. That's a big part of water poisoning!. You're basically diluting all the stuff in your body!. That's why Gatorade and other sports drinks include salt and sugar!. It often happens when someone is exercising for a long time (marathon) but not eating and only drinking water!.

If you drink one gallon of water per day, and you drink that gallon over the course of the day and eat normally, you won't get water poisoning!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, it is!. It's called hyperhydration or water poisoning and you can actually die from it!.

Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by water!. Normal, healthy (both physically and nutritionally) individuals have little to worry about accidentally consuming too much water!. Nearly all deaths related to water intoxication in normal individuals have resulted either from water drinking contests, in which individuals attempt to consume more than ten litres over the course of just a few minutes, or long bouts of intensive exercise during which electrolytes are not properly replenished, yet massive amounts of fluid are still consumed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes! It is called water intoxication, and people have died from it!

"Hyponatremia, also called water intoxication, is generally the result of drinking excessive amounts of plain water which causes a low concentration of sodium in the blood!. Once a rare occurrence at sporting events, it is becoming more prevalent as participation increases and more novice exercisers are entering endurance events!.!.!.Symptoms of Hyponatremia!.!.!.The early warning signs are often subtle and may be similar to dehydration and include nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, slurred speech, and confusion!. At this point, many athletes drink more water because they think they are dehydrated!. Unfortunately, water alone will increase the problem of hyponatremia!. At the most extreme an athlete may experience seizures, coma, or death!."
