Question: Can you get Strong by picking up heavy books instead of weights!?

Why not!?

Your lifting something, which will, inturn, increase strength!.

You shouldn't use this as an actual excercise, however, because it would really put strain on your back!.

Your best bet is to use a machine to gain strength, or free weights in an upright position!.
