What are the benefits of lifting weights to the point of exhaustion?!

Question:

What are the benefits of lifting weights to the point of exhaustion?

Is it necessary to lift to failure in order to build muscle or tone your muscles or get definition? Is there really anything beneficial about going to exhaustion on any set? I know that in order to get stronger, going to exhaustion is absolutely not necessary. You just have to lift heavier weights. But is it necessary to go to exhaustion in order to get that toned look and feel? Does going to exhaustion somehow make the strength gains or the muscle size last longer? Or if you don't go to failure, is it necessary to at least cause a certain degree of fatigue in your muscles?

Why do the last reps need to be hard?
You said do more reps as you get stronger? I thought the ability to do more reps was an indicator of endurance, not strength. Are you saying that each additional consecutive repetition performed makes you stronger, no matter how much or how little weight you are lifting?

Answers:

there is a point, when ppl refer to getting 'ripped' it means u r exhausting your tissue and rebuilding it, bigger than it was before
