The "muscle weighs more than fat" theory?!

Question: The "muscle weighs more than fat" theory!?
I'm not a big fan of this theory!. I really don't want to look like Mike Tyson, but don't want to lose strength, either!. There's a practical concern, as well -- if I stay at my weight (200) there's added stress on my aging (38) joints when I run!.

Is it really possible to lose weight without losing strength/endurance/etc!.!? I've been at this for 1!.5 years, trying various diets/strategies!. Honestly, with my body type, I've never been under 190 even though I was a college athlete back in the day!.

Thanks for any help!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The amount of muscle mass you will acquire is a genetic factor!. If you're naturally muscular, you're going to end up gaining muscle mass when you exercise, up to a certain point!. Your best bet is to just do cardio workouts with some light weight lifting for problem areas!.

Don't worry as much about your weight as you do about muscle tone!. As long as your heart and lungs are in good shape, there's not much you're going to be able to do about your joints, except for keeping your workouts low impact and trying to keep the deterioration to a minimum!. Opt for bicycling or walking over running!. Use an elliptical machine or a rowing machine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Muscle does not "weigh more" than fat!. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of anything else!.

Now, a cubic inch of fat, is going to weigh less than a cubic inch of muscle, because muscle is denser!. So that's why people who start exercising to lose weight often gain weight even though they can't see it!.

But it sounds like your question was really, can you lose weight without losing athletic ability!. Yes!. If you're running you're going to build muscular strength and endurance which will increase your metabolism, causing you to burn more calories!. If you eat carefully, you will lose fat while staying around the same weight!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My matabolism flies!.!. and I am in my last half of the thirties as well!.!.!.!.but I also have a physically demanding job!.!.!.So that may contribute to the ability to stay lean!.!.!.who knows!? But it is true!.!.!.the more muscle you have the less fat you will have!.!.!.and muscle is easier on joints, in fact contributes to the overall strength of supporting your skeletal system!.!.!.so don't be too down on the theory!.!.!.use it to benefit you!.!.!.just remember everything in moderation!.!.!.and talk to your doctor about how to keep your joints healthy!.!.!.Mine feel worse when I don't keep them moving!.!.!.Take care!.:)Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you're doing strength training while dieting, and making sure that you're getting enough protein!.!.!. you won't have to worry about losing strength at all!. And as a woman, just casually lifting weights won't turn you into Mike Tyson!. I've always been very anti-BMI standards because I've never been close to being at my "healthy" BMI!.!.!. but now I'm wondering if I've just been making excuses!? So I'm trying my hardest to get there!. Good luck! :-)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Muscle is much denser and therefore heavier!. Your fat is boyant and lighter!. That's why fat people float much easier than muscular people in a pool!. It's not theory, it's fact!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's not a theory!. Muscle weighs more, but it also burns fat and tones you, so it's good to have some!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
