A push-up will not be the appropriate exercise to work your way up to a chin-up because the muscles trained in doing a pushup are actually in opposition to the muscles needed for a chin-up!. To be able to do successful chin-ups, you'll need to strengthen your upper back (latissimus dorsi, trapezius) muscles, and outer upper shoulders (deltoids)!. There are many ways to work these muscles, but try focusing primarily on pulling motions rather than pushing motions!. There are many machines that will allow you to essentially do a chin-up motion but instead you will be pulling a bar down to under your chin as opposed to lifting your body up to meet the bar!. These machines will allow you to set the weight that you are pulling down, and consistent training until you are able to increase the weight on those machines to match and exceed your body weight will be what lets you know that you are ready to lift your own body weight on the chin-up bar!.

lat pulls and biceps curls
lats are the muscles on ur side/back sort of underneath and behind ur arm pits and you need those to do pull ups!. You also need biceps to help pull!. pushups and dips are good to help make u stronger but they arent gonna do u any good when it comes to pulling because they are not pulling exercises!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Chin ups are biceps and deltoids (shoulders)!. You can do curls and arm raises (raise your arm straight out from your shoulder holding a weight)!. That said, don't just focus on one "event"!. You want to do a combination of exercises!. There are a number of books out there about weight training that can be helpful (and with Amazon, cheap)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Perhaps you need to do some type of arm curls!? Seeing as your arms are lifting you up, I'd suggest getting those strengthened!. I don't have any specific guidelines, but if you look up anything on basic arm workouts, you should be fine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
