Heard all that extra protein isnt necessary for strength training? Why do you us!

Question:

Heard all that extra protein isnt necessary for strength training? Why do you use it?

. . . regarding things like protein shakes?
Can you give me some insight on this matter?

Answers:

Hmmm . . . well, I don't quite know what you mean by "all that" protein or where you heard it. Here is what my handy sports nutrition reference says:

Nonathletes do well with approximately 0.8 g of protein per kg of body weight per day. For a 165 lb individual that would be about 60 g per day.
Athletes require 1.2 to 1.7 g of protein per kg of body weight per day.
[In a table]
Endurance athletes should consume about 3800 calories per day, 1.2-1.4 g/kg/day protein, 84-98 g of protein per day.
Strength athletes should consume about 3200 calories per day, 1.6-1.7 g/kg/day protein, 112-119 g of protein per day.

Elsewhere, it says that protein can be converted to glucose for energy. But the reaction yields nitrogen that must be excreted in urine. So, even though protein is a rather inefficient fuel, excess protein does not go to waste. The book mentions that it is a complete waste of resources to burn protein as a fuel. (I just realized how that sounds . . . let me clear that up right now. Excess protein can be used as energy, but it is best used for other things so using it for energy is a waste. Relatively speaking, that is. Whew!)

I eat protein powder regularly. It is very convenient for me because I don't have a great deal of time to cook and I don't care much for tuna. Good night!
