Hot dog eating contest?!

Question:

Hot dog eating contest?

"NEW YORK (CNN) -- Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut unseated the six-time defending champion in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest on Wednesday, eating 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes."

How can anyone do this to himself? Such a huge quantity of processed meat, containing nitrites, nitrates, salt, and fillers, plus all that white bread, is an assault not only to the digestive system but to the circulatory system and the entire body. So much protein will lower the pH of the blood to an unhealthy level, plus it will be a strain on the liver and kidneys to process all the byproducts of metabolism.

Answers:

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. This is not healthy at all, and these guys are crazy for doing this of course. But, most athletes do things to their bodies which are not healthy for the sake of their sport. Its not wise, but they don't care, they just want to compete. Its the same for these guys, they truck on despite the obvious health risks. Plus, if they don't eat like this too often and lead an otherwise healthy lifestyle, the side effects of this should be minimal.
