Time spent at the gym?!

Question:

Time spent at the gym?

i go to the gym 6 days a week and i'am 17 years old. i've been told to stay at the gym for less than an hour and some say its ok as along as you stay under 1.5 hours...which is right? also, how long should i rest in between sets? If i was working triceps and chest that day, i usualy end up doing 3 chest exercises and 3 tricep exercises and then my hour is up. is that enough working out for one day? i feel like i could be doing 4 exercises of each but i dont wanna overdo it cuz i know then you start to lose muscle. (one exercise = 3 sets of ten reps then 8 reps then 6 reps)

Answers:

Your focus shouldn't be on how long you spend at the gym but the quality of your workout. Your goal should be to get as close to total muscle breakdown as you can for your workout. The 'overdoing' it that you're referring to is when you don't give your muscles enough time to rest between WORKOUTS, not between exercises during a workout. If you give them enough protein and downtime to rebuild, then your goal should be to tear down your muscles as completely as possible. You want to eat foods high in carbs about an hour before your workout (this gives you energy), then foods high in protein after your workout (this will help to rebuild your muscles). To give you an idea of a successful workout plan, here's a general idea of mine:

Monday - Upper Body (Biceps, Triceps, Pecs, Lats, etc.)
Tuesday - Lower Body (Quads, Hamstrings, Calves, etc.)
Wednesday - Cardio Work (Running, Racquetball, Plyo work)
Thursday - Rest
Friday - Upper Body
Saturday - Lower Body
Sunday - Cardio
Monday - Rest

I have a flexible workout schedule, being a personal trainer, but something like that will get you faster and stronger before you know it

Good luck and e-mail me at bri_man727@yahoo.com with any questions,
