Gastric By Pass vs. Lapband surgery?!

Question:

Gastric By Pass vs. Lapband surgery?

I'm just curious why people are still getting gastric bypass when Lapband is 10 times safer and less risky then bypass and cost almost half as much. I do know with the bypass you lose weight faster, but as we all know thats not healthy. Almost anybody i've ever heard of thats had bypass is very sick. They need supplements after supplements to support the lack of nutrition. I got lapband surgery and i'm as healthy as a horse. I lost 80LBS. If I ever wanted to be fat again I could have it removed, bypass is permanent. I can't imagine being malnurished all the time. Anybody know? Please don't anybody be rude by saying people that get weight loss surgerys are lazy because that isn't my question and thats not true.

Answers:

Lap Band is NOT 10 times safer and the cost in many cases isn't much different. Also, if everyone you've heard that has had gastric bypass is very sick, that is an EXTREME statistical anomaly.

Gastric Bypass is extremely safe now, especially if done laproscopically. In fact, the mortality rate is four times greater for knee replacement surgery than for Gastric Bypass.

As to why people chose it over the lap band, that depends on the person. The lap band is better for people who have less to lose. If someone has more to lose, Gastric Bypass or the duodenal switch is generally better. Also, if a person's weight gain is from sugars, gastric bypass is better, since most people experience dumping syndrome if they eat sugar.

If you have a BMI under 50, and you are overweight because of portion control only, then the lap band is probably better.

I had gastric bypass one year ago today, and I have no complications related to it. I am also completely healthy and have had no problems with malnutrition. This is the story of the VAST majority of people who have had this surgery.

As to why I didn't select the lap band, I wanted to have surgery once and be done with it. I didn't want a foreign object in my body that had to be filled, emptied, and refilled. I didn't want to deal with band slippage. I also didn't want something that they would eventually take out and thus increase the chance of gaining back the weight.

I've often wondered why many people who have had a certain type of surgery feel the need to trumpet it as "the only viable option", especially when they feel a need to use incorrect information to prove their point.
