Not losing weight.?!

Question:

Not losing weight.?

My wife has been dieting and excersizing for about 4 months and she is seeing almost not change in her appearence, the way her clothes fit or her weight. I don't know how much she weighs but I know she's getting frustrated. Before she ate whatever she wanted and stayed the same. Now she's eating next to nothing, going to the gym every day and staying the same. She is certainly feeling better about herself, but I know it's frustating her.

Answers:

A couple good points made above. She needs to eat regularly to keep her metabolism up and also out of "starvation" mode which will cause her body to store as much of her incoming calories as fat as possible. As a side note to this, she may be eating very little, but she might be eating the exact wrong kinds of foods on top of that. Weight loss goals typically require low carb intake, high protein, lots of veggies, and about 55% intake from healthy fat based on calories. Yep, FAT.

What a lot of people forget to take into account is a body composition measures. You could maintain the same weight, but gain lean tissue while losing fat tissue and be in much better shape. I recommend buying a decent scale that measures body fat (probably in the $100 range).

Most importantly, if she is not really seeing results, she is not going about it right. She shouldn't quit, but definitely reevaluate what she is doing and try something that is a bit different. A lot of people quit a fitness program because they don't see results without even considering making a change. Everyone can lose weight, but few have the motivation to actively do whatever it takes to reach their goals and keep the weight off.
