From experience, if you really want to shed off a lot of pounds and gain more muscle mass, you should take on a rigorous daily running or swimming program or join your school's cross country or track/swimming team to get in shape the quickest!. Add on a daily weight training regimen and you're all set!
Of course, other cardio sports, such as dance, tennis, etc are good too, but from my experience, running and swimming are the most direct and effective way to lose weight fast and gain muscles!. And you'll grow to enjoy it!
