Its a good alternative to flat out running!.
I use jump rope mostly to prevent the shin splints from running, and it makes a good alternative for agility training (for football and basketball)!.
I do a basic spread for jump rope!.
The normal classis feet together jump,
Left foot only,
Right foot only,
Backwards,
Side ways,
And sometimes jump rope running (jump and actually move out of place)Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is very good for endurance and coordination!. Begin with just skipping on two feet for 30, then 50, then 60!.!.!.to 100 skips!. Do as many sets as you can such as 50 skips/rest/50 skips again!. With time you will be able to do 10 sets!. When you can do this well then begin by skipping on one foot then the other!. When this is achieved then try skipping for 5, 10 or 15 minutes non stop!.
