Help im trying to lose weight but finding it difficult i have a underactive thyr!

Question:

Help im trying to lose weight but finding it difficult i have a underactive thyroid?

i do take thyroxine

Answers:

Hello, I have the same problem, it's going to be an ongoing struggle but it's possible to manage. First thing you should do is always take your medication at the same time every day. The best time to take it is 30 minutes before you eat breakfast. I leave my meds on the bedside table and take them as soon as I wake up and then go for a shower. Make sure you don't take iron at the same time as this can interfere with thyroxine up-take.

Now, for actual diet, make sure you eat as much natural food at possible, avoid pre-prepared junky and fatty food. Fresh veg, fruit, pasta, rice and meat is good. Try to keep your carbohydrates to a minimum, lets say a quarter of your meal or less. Don't cut them out altogether but don't have too much. Avoid soya products as this can interefere with your thyroxine levels.

To get your metabolism in good working order, make sure you exercise every day. It doesn't have to be strenuous, just a 30 minute walk in the morning (before you get to work) will help your metabolism to speed up. If you have a very sedentary job, make sure you get some exercise during the day.

Finally, the best guide for managing your weight with thyroid problems is 'The Thyroid Diet' by Mary J. Shomon. I recommend you get it and refer to it when in doubt. She's basically the expert in this area and will have even more tips. A lot of what I know comes from this book (which I should probably read again). She explains what the various reasons are that your low thyroid can cause weight gain/retention.She advises what to eat, what not to eat and how to eat and lists useful recipes. She also recommends certain vitamins and supplements.

What you should always keep in mind is that weight is nowhere near as important as health. You are already a step down on the ladder, so you need to prioritise your health, as you are at higher risk than average of having other illnesses. Especially if your hypothyroidism is due to the auto-immune disease Hashimoto's Thyroidistis. Take care of yourself and keep your body in good condition. The weight will always be hovering in the background and you'll learn to live with it, but don't let it rule your life.
